Hi everyone, right now I am running a am3 motherboard with a phenom II x3 720 with a gtx970, and what i wanted get some opinions whether o should upgrade or not.

I was thinking of a new mb, CPU and Ram.

I mostly game on this computer.

And on another note I would love it if ltt would make a compare video between a phenom II x3 720 and a Ryzen ?

Best wishes

Welcome to the LTT forum!

First piece of advice: keep the 970. Even 4 years after release, the 970 is a capable card.

But as for what CPU, MB, & RAM... what is your budget?

And yes, an LTT video comparing a Phenom II X3 to a Ryzen 3 would be entertaining.

money wise you can get a bit more life buy putting a fx8350 cpu in it.

if you want a mobo combo I recommend ryzen 2700 kit but be sure the mobo has support for the gen3x4 M.2 slot(s)

with that GPU the FX8350 shouldn't bottleneck. jaystwocents found it will not bottleneck until something like the 1070

Budget, hmm some where in the range of 500-1000$ the cheaper the better.

I was looking at a Ryzen 2600(X) and a

B450 based mobo, with 16gb 2400mhz ram.

In Sweden where I live that combo would cost about 620$. Is that reasonable pricing?

Best wishes

CPU: Ryzen 5 1600. They're cheaper than the 2nd gen parts and work on B450/X470 motherboards. Only difference is slightly lower clock speed, but it's still unlocked, so you can solve that yourself.

RAM: Since we're only worrying about these 3 parts, I'd suggest a 2 x 8, DDR4-3200 MHz memory kit.

Motherboard: Any mid-range B350 motherboard works. Bonus points if its B450. X370/X470 is fine too, but the only difference is that you can run more than 1 GPU.

Thanks for the fast feedback ? now I got some clarity in what is the more cost effective platform?

Most likely it will be a B450 mobo, since I will never have more than one GPU, most likely Asus only because I like there products.

With a Ryzen 1600, slightly overclocked

And 16gb 3200mhz ram

Should I buy the 1600 or the 1600x?

And should I use the stock cooler or buy an aio liquid cooler?

Hello, there.

To answer your question: it depends.

IMO, if you want a light OC, use the stock cooler with the 1600. If you want a guaranteed 4 GHz OC, get an AIO... and the 1600.
