Sometime in the near future i plan to purchase a video capture card most likely this

I was wondering about the system resources these things use when recording and how much of a difference if any these things would have on my gaming experience as opposed to using something like fraps?

You need to have a NVIDIA Pascal GPU that supports NVENC to be able to use this capture card (so at the very least GTX 1050).

Not sure what you want to use the capture card for if you just want to record gameplay on the same machine on which it will be used. In that use scenario, you can just use OBS to record the gameplay by using NVENC or just use Shadowplay... it will be the same as using the capture card.
