Hi there,

Just shooting a personal dilemma your way since I don't have any friends that are into pc stuff

My system is around 4 years old now and I am looking for an upgrade on everything for the end of this year.

I have a Cooler Master V750 (SEMI-modular, 2014) right now and it will be plenty for my potential new rig (9000 series and RTX if I can). My only issue with it is that, besides being semi-modular, it has macdonalds colored cables with this weird mesh around it. Since I want my new build to stick with me through university (next 5 years), I'd hate myself if I didn't do something about it.

I believe I have 2 options;

- I could get a new PSU; something like a Corsair RM750x is €100. (I could sell the old one, don't think for much tho)

- Or I could get some Cablemod extensions for €35. (Although I think I'll go mATX, so it might be hard to fit it all in?)

My issue here is that I feel that if I bought the extensions, I might as well spend the extra €65 on a fully modular PSU with already good cables.

I want to know if that would be a misstep, so I guess my question is; would you spend the extra €65 in light of a ~€1800 build?

Custom extensions would probably look better than any stock cables that would come with a new psu. If you're using a psu shroud and your objective is to improve aesthetics, just go with extensions.

..custom cables do look great and are probably what I end up going with. I guess I could use the €65 if RAM or other prices go up again.

Dunno for sure, but the V750 should last a good 10 years easily right?

5 year warranty though.

The fixed 24-pin and 8-pin should be hidden behind the motherboard tray (unless your case has a window on BOTH sides).  If you can see anything more than the ends of the cables where they plug into the motherboard, THAT is what you're doing wrong.  Don't use extensions.

The PCIe and SATA cables are the only cables you should be able to see (and in many cases, you can't see the latter because the drives mount in the back) and those are modular and the cables can be replaced with new cables; NOT extensions.

So what case is this that you're using?

I can see the 24 pin and EPS barely indeed, but this case (CM 690 III) is very dark and I want to go with something whiteish.

In the jpg I attached you can see the main problem.

(excuse the VERY poor quality, it's evening here and the lights in my room aren't great, so I grabbed a flashlight)

The PCIe cable with all the loops and such is very much visible in this windowed case. Most cases these days have full tempered glass, so it will be even worse in my new case (NZXT H-series?).20180913_202336.thumb.jpg.ac70774ebbfb2781e54519e134d457b2.jpg

Right.  But your PCIe cables are modular, aren't they?

That's what I said you can just buy the PCIe cables.

Extensions aren't good.  They add resistance and another point of failure.  There was just a guy on here yesterday who melted his 24-pin connector due to using extensions.  It's just not a good game plan.

Don't use just any PCIe cable though as not all modular cables use the same pin layout, for example plugging a Corsair PCIe cable in a Cooler Master Semi Modular/Fully Modular PSU can kill the PSU. And to make it worse the same brand PSU's (but different models) and even some same model PSUs (but different wattage) can use different pin layouts as well. So be careful with swapping out the included modular cables with different ones.

No they are not. The 24pin, the EPS and the PCIe cables are the only cables wierdly colored and not modular.

This is why I was looking into extensions.

So I guess that, if I want to get rid of the bad looking cables, I'll have to buy a new PSU.

Nope, only Peripherials:

That's crappy.  :(

Then get a new PSU.
