So last night my PC failed to start displaying Q code 00.  I checked the manual and Qcode 00 is not used, however Google tells me it's a CPU problem.

My system specs are:

  • CPU: i7-4790K
  • Motherboard: ASUS Z97-Pro
  • RAM: G.Skill 2x8gb
  • GPU: Gigabyte 1080
  • 2 SSDs and 2 HDDs
  • PSU: EVGA Supernova 750W G2

So far my troubleshooting steps have been to:

  • Check all cables for proper fitment
  • Remove/Reinstall CPU and inspect pins
  • Remove the motherboard and test with only the CPU and a single RAM stick.
  • Changed PSU CPU power cable
  • Changed PSU
  • Alternated single RAM sticks
  • Cleared CMOS
  • Removed battery and cleared CMOS

The PC was shipped from WA to CT in November, but I had braced the CPU cooler and GPU as well as inspected it upon arrival.  Early this week, on Monday I believe, I got a Q code 99 when waking up from sleep.  I shut down the PC and checked cables and finding nothing restarted with no issues.

Thoughts on my next step?  I do not have another LGA1150 Motherboard nor another CPU.

Any LEDs on the board? I had a bios issue not long about and my VGA LED lit up for no reason.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

It's either a dead CPU or the motherboard is faulty and can't find a CPU. What I suggest you do is find a cheap LGA 1150 board on Ebay (preferably H97) just to check if it is in fact a faulty motherboard, if it works then try and find another Z97 board and if it doesn't work then you have a dead CPU.

Yeah, you only need a cheap board to see what is wrong with your current set-up. You may even end up selling it on once you've finished with it.

  • 4 weeks later...

So update to my situation.

I finally won a cheap motherboard off ebay and I was able to determine that my motherboard had failed and my CPU is still good.

However I could not get LAN drivers for the new motherboard so while I could get my PC up and running I couldn't get onto the internet.  I used my laptop to download several drivers from the manufactures website but still didn't work.

While surfing Craigslist I spotted a Asrock Fatality Z87 Pro with a CPU and memory for a decent price.  I picked it up swapped my CPU in and have successfully gotten the system running and got the appropriate drivers for the LAN.

My new problem is audio.  The Z87 came with a Creative Labs Sound Card.  Everytime I attempt to install the drivers and software for the sound card the installer freezes.  I've updated InstallShield, I've turned off active scanning of my Antivirus, I've run a CCleaner registry sweep. I cannot get this to work and so I have no sound.  If I take the card out I get no sound from the motherboards onboard chip.
