"Reboot and Select proper Boot device"

I am struggling. My hard drive was not working properly so I bought a SSD, which was much faster than the hard drive. I loved it. However, the pc booted off the hard drive and asked me if I wanted to do a disk repair or skip. When I skipped, it went to my SSD and booted Windows of my SSD like normal. However, once I unplugged my hard drive I receive a message saying Reboot and Select proper Boot drive.

Any solutions? I would appreciate any help. Sorry if there was anything that did not make sense.

It sounds like you installed Windows onto the SSD while the hard drive was still connected as the primary boot device.

Is that correct?

If that's the case, the reason your machine isn't booting is that your actual boot loader is located on your hard drive (the BCD store), but your Windows install is on the SSD. You can try to repair your installation by booting from your Windows install media and trying to do a repair, but I've heard that this doesn't always work anymore. Recreating/replacing a completely missing BCD is harder than repairing a corrupted one.

The only guaranteed solution I know of is to reinstall Windows on the drive when it's the only drive installed on the system (or the drive is the primary boot device at the time). That'll ensure that the boot and system partitions are both created on the SSD and it'll operate fine by itself. Right now your machine is relying on the boot loader located on the hard drive to boot the windows install on the SSD.

Did you do a fresh OS install on the SSD with the HDD connected with an OS on it?

This has caused me probs in the past.

Try re-installing your OS on the SSD without the HDD connected.

Then connect your HDD and delete all the extra partitions on it.

You can see that only my boot drive has extra OS partitions.

Try googling how to make hiren bootcd bootable usb, you'll need an empty usb flashdrive at least 1GB capacity.

Boot from the usb and select the 1st option.

If i remember correctly, it says "boot windows from hdd..."

That option will try fund an installed Windows on your hdd and remake the mbr and bcd.

I don't know the details tho, it's been awhile since i used hiren bcd.

@Tabs @wONKEyeYEs

Thanks so much for the information. You have cleared my confusion. Time to re install Windows and every application I just installed haha. I guess I have learned something new and now have more knowledge. Also, now I will not repeat this mistake. Thanks everyone for the help. I really appreciate it.
