Hello guys,

Today a friend of mine asked me to install windows to his old computer for which he bought an ssd so it will run faster. So i though it will be a standard installation -- i mean i have done so many i can't count but to my surprise i've been running into problems all the time. So lets begin then. I have a bootable USB drive just so you know. Firstly i've tried to install windows 10 as per his wish, everything went smootly i install the OS and restart. At the windows 10 logo after the installation where it says "preparing your devices" it always ran into a problem where i believe the hardware wasn't supported so the procces was never a success. Ok i decided to reinstall windows 7 which we had before. And this is where things started to get weird. For the get go i couldn't get into the actual "install now" screen, i've tried multiple things from disabling secure boot to changing to legacy boot and also i tried to make a bootable usb with GPT as suggested on a tom's hardware forum. But none of these things worked. So i turned to making a new bootable usb, maybe the iso was corrupt. The next time i tried i just kept getting the bootmgr error, i also decided to unplug all the drives apart from the ssd BUT then nothing ever happened, only a black sceen all the time. I could hear the post beep but the screen was always black. So i plug all of them back again i could get into the "install now" screen but then it got stuck on "setup prepairing". So after hours of troubles and searching for an answer i gave up and that's why i'm turning onto you guys. Most of my tries just ended with the bootmgr error and that was it either i missed something and i'm getting old or somethings odd. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

Kind regard,

Gašper

Windows 7 can be iffy with UEFI. You better make your boot drive for MBR, and set your UEFI to Legacy mode to emulate the old BIOS. That is if you want Windows 7. So you can try that.

Windows 10 should be working. If it fails at "preparing your devices" you usually have a log file generated, and you can get it by booting from your USB flash drive with Windows 10 setup, pick repair, and open the command prompt window, navigate and view the log file there. If it gets stuck, depending on the percentage it would mean a variety of things. Anyway, too late now. Also, Microsoft's Windows 10 Media Creation tool to the best way to prepare and get Windows 10 setup on your USB Flash drive.  So I don't know if you used another method, but the Media Creation Tool ensures you have the latest version of Windows 10.

Is your issue solved?

If not that might help

I have had similar errors when installing windows 10 on another laptop (and even worst when going back to windows 7 with corrupted partition etc...)

The hardware is probably supported if you were able to run windows 7 previously.

Also if the computer is old check if it meets at LEAST the minimum requirements(I would say at least surpass them by 150% / 200%) because if it is not the case your computer will be super slow.

You could also see if the ssd boots on another device which you know works
