Hi guys,

Hoping to get some help with my issue, this might be a bit long winded but I'll try to describe the problem in as much detail as I can.

System

Asus Rog Strix z370-I

i78086k

Corsair Dominator 16g 3000mhz

SF600 / OCZ Z series 1000W

GTX 780 / GTX 580

Samsung 970 EVO

So I assembled the computer ~3 weeks ago. Computer would randomly shut itself off and struggle to turn back on. (After pressing the power switch the fans would start whirring for 2-3 seconds then computer would shut itself off.) I suspect it's a PSU SF600 problem so I hooked it up to my old OCZ PSU, everything works fine. I attempted to RMA the SF600 but it turns out there was no fault found, thinking they were full of shit I returned it anyway and copped a 30% restocking fee. For the next 2 weeks everything was running smoothly with the old OCZ PSU, I was able to find my 5GHZ overclock, stress test and play games.

Yesterday the problems started to appear again, (I'm running the stock bios defaults at this stage) computer would randomly shut off and takes a few attempts to start the computer again (shuts off after 2-3 seconds). Today I cannot start it at all (shuts off after 2-3 seconds)

Things I have tried:

  • Resetting bios by shorting the CLRTC pins - Computer starts up a few times then goes back to shutting itself off after 2-3 seconds
  • Replace the Gtx780 which was working fine in old computer and last 3 weeks with an old gtx 580 lying around (tested to be working in an old computer) - Computer can start but it is irregular sometimes gets to the windows login before it shuts itself off. Mostly shuts itself of after 2-3 seconds
  • Reseat the ram, switch them around - no change
  • Remove the GPU altogether - computer starts up fine unable to comment on whether it is stable though.
  • Not using the power switch, turning it on by shorting the pins itself - no change.

At this stage I'm out of ideas as to what to do, I feel that it's unlikely the issue is GPU or PSU, hopefully someone with more experienced would be able to make something out of all these issues. Any help is appreciated thanks.

So without a graphics card installed, the PC works mostly fine, no problems?

But as soon as you add one back in, the problems arise again?

Just looking for clarification here.

That's right, doesn't work with 2 separate graphics cards which are know to be working in an older system. boots fine without any card installed

Try a different PCIe slot.

If that doesn't work, try a different power supply.

There's only one PCIe slot on the motherboard. Thanks for your response, doesn't hurt to try with a third power supply I guess.

This isnt the Best thing to do, but no one can stop you.. Buy the same PSU, and then make a return and send back the old broken one saying its DOA

Thank you for the suggestion but after attempting to return what I thought was a faulty PSU they tested it and found that there was actually no fault with it. As I was unconvinced at the time I returned it anyway to save me the hassle of what I thought was a faulty PSU and incurring a penalty of 30% of the purchase price in the process. As this problem has occurred again after 3 weeks using another PSU I'm starting to think it wasn't actually the problem. However, I will make an attempt to test a third power supply.

Tried the third power supply an AX860. Doesn't boot with or without a graphics card installed.

I would suspect the motherboard at this point.
