I using a Windows Surface Pro 4 and it's providing by my school. The only problem is that it wipes the computer on restart. I don't want to go in a try to disable the program as I could tet into a of trouble. So I wanted to boot of Windows 10 on a usb that was plugged into my computer but wondering about driver compatibility and whether I need to install drivers.

TL;DR

Windows 10 usb boot on Surface 4 Pro. Are drivers a concern? Do i need to install them on my usb?

Make a Windows ToGo drive using Rufus and the Windows 10 ISO from Media Creation Tool and as for drivers, just install them to the ToGo drive like you would any other driver. Most of the drivers will likely work out of the box though since it is a Microsoft OEM device

what do you mean it wipes the computer on restart? like its reformatted?

It's some custom refresh which cleans user files and any installed stuff from drive. My school uses that on laptops they have for short period loans. I'm not sure if this is same, as those connect to virtual desktop when logged onto schools network.

he means like norton Ghost , Deep Freeze , Reboot Restore RX ...

there are lot of those programs

the thing you could do if you really want to use it as your personal pc is to use a windows 2 Go usb

or you can use a Live linux cd and mount the free space ?

but on other side , i am sure if it is from school they locked the bios with a password

and usb boot is disabled xD

else the complete purpose of the ghost boot is pointless

it is not the same

the virtual desktop you login is just a .... virtual desktop

mostly a rdp connection or Citrix based workspace share

best compared to Active Directory and Roaming profiles

but then a bit more secure and remote based

or in short , a VM you connect to over a proxy :D

but why you want to run it from a usb anyway ?

it is slow to boot up ( specialy usb 2 )

games do not run on it ( atleast not for me )

It has USB 3.0 and I have a USB 3.0 128gb San disk usb that is not compatible with Windows 2 Go. They haven't looked the bios which is super strange but the surface has some weird windows based bios that I can't seem to run the Windows install that I got with Rufus. I am just using the USB to hold everything, but I'm having no luck with installing windows.

Any ideas of what is best to do.

instead of rufus use Easy2boot ( same creator , differend program and always works , even the 128gb Sandisk should  work )

you only need a iso cd , convert it to a container ( E2B ) and run from the container ( in case the iso does not work directly )

but keep in mind , running windows from usb is still slow (depending on the usb stick , it stays slower then a SSD or even a hard drive )

for example

my Emtec usb runs at 45 MB, my laptop hd (5200 rpm ) connected with a sata connector over usb 3 works at 110 MB

but also those things depends on other things just like all usb drivers and SSD disks
