You're testing the new Proton feature in Steam?
That sounds like pretty normal behaviour for a Bethesda game on any OS.

Check the audio settings and make sure it's not trying to do surround sound, as I had a similar problem with audio in Skyrim quite a while ago when my Centre speaker died and I could no longer hear NPC voices, but the rest of the game audio still played fine through Left/Right/Rear speakers. Seemed that the game tried to play any NPC audio through the centre channel. Fixed it by setting the audio to stereo mode and then voices were played through left/right speakers.

Just the OS audio/speaker settings.
Not sure if Skyrim has an option for stereo/surround in its in-game audio settings, but have a look.
