Hello,

I'm currently planning a new build just wanted to see what people though of the parts.

1. Budget & Location

I live in Australia so AUD$ if posible, we pay a small premium on parts here. I have a budget of $2800(AUD) max. I use PcCaseGear to price my parts as I have found them to be the best here.

2. Aim

This Computer is being built as a replacement and present to myself, I will obviously be using it for gaming, hopefully at 2560 x 1440 native for most games on high - "ultra" settings. But I also want the option to run almost any programs I could ever want including multiple vmware instances to make a virtual test lab.

3. Monitors

I am planning to buy a PB278Q (2560 x 1440) to upgrade from my old outdated Samsung syncmaster (1680 x 1050). I don't see my self moving to multi-monitors.

4. Peripherals

I currenlty use a Ducky Shine II DK9008 MX-Blue and love it, and a plain old Deathadder. I'm not updating them.

5. Why are you upgrading?

I am upgrading because my current desktop is 6 years old and still kicking, but its limited on what it can do, so its time to go all out ( in my budget) for a new computer.

6.Parts

CPU: 3930k

Motherboard: Asus P9X79 Deluxe( I like the dual lan)

GPU : Gigabyte 7970 ghz 3gb

Memory: Corsair Dominator 16gb( 4x4gb) 1866mhz (CMP16GX3M4X1866C9)

Boot Drive: 256gb Samsung 840 Pro

Storage Drive: WD 3tb Green

PSU: Silverstone strider 750w

CPU Cooler: H80i

Case: Silverstone FT02

Monitor: Asus PB278Q

Extras: Silverstone cable, Alchemy strips, etc...

7.Other Notes

I will be using windows 7 ultimate as I have some keys already. I plan to do some light overclocking on the cpu maybe 4.5ghz if possible but 4ghz would be fine. I would like this computer to last many years as I'm not inclined to keep updating my build.

I will appreciate any input.

  • 2 weeks later...

I would go with at least a caviar blue or barracuda drive since the greens are meant for long term server-esque storage

Not really recommended for regular desktop use because of the speeds (unless in raid)

3770k, Asrock Extreme 4, 16GB Dominator Plat, AX760i, 250GB BX100, 1.5TB Seagate, Win 7 Home Prem

Sorry only just saw replies, didn't get any for a week. The Ft02 sadly doesn't support the h100i :(.

I have ordered the parts, I changed the gigabyte card to the Asus 7970 Directcu ii top(my supplier only had top so why not)

I chose the green just for local storage(I thought it would preform good enough) if it doesn't work well enough ill buy a better drive. I will have all my media on a local file server that I'm 90% finished building(just waiting for the hdd's in the same order as my other parts), it gives about 70mb/s read using a non-raid disk.

I plan to post a small build log on my new system when I build it this week.
