Hey all!
A few weeks ago I bought myself a 'PNY Attaché 4 64 GB USB3 Memory Stick/Drive' from Amazon for an amazing £10! But there's one thing... Windows isn't recognising it any more.
The odd thing is I have only used it ONCE. I copied some videos to it and never used it until now. Today I put it into one of my cases USB 3 slots and it was fine, I go to delete the videos and it starts deleting but I got a message saying it cannot find the videos any more and suddenly windows cannot open the USB. I now get 'please insert a disk into usb drive'.
Google'ing the issue seems to only find ways to get the data, I don't care about the data I just want my new USB working fine again.
Any suggestions on what I can do?
Thanks!

I suggest you follow the following steps to wipe the drive and create a new partition (if you have data to recover then don't wipe it, of course):

  • Open a Command Window (cmd)
  • Enter diskpart
  • Enter list disk
  • Enter select disk x where x is your USB key
  • Enter clean
  • Enter create part primary
  • Enter select part 1
  • Enter active
  • Enter format fs=fat32

I've tried that already actually but diskpart tells me 'diskpart has encountered an error: the device is not ready'

At what state of the process does it tell you it isn't ready? Tried moving the USB around to a different port?

After 'clean' I get the message. I have tried different ports and also a different computer but all say the same.
Update: after switching ports again, diskpart shows the USB disk as 'no media' 0GB found

Probably a connector issue, it's quite common for usb drive connectors to loosen or break. I'd crack it open and check that every connectors are still properly soldered if it isn't being detected properly by tools like diskpart or a linux distro.

Oddly, the connectors are not the issue, I can use a different USB drive and other devices just fine.
Even using a port on my motherboard shows the USB as 'no media'

Not talking about the ports here, talking about the actual usb connector on the usb stick, because it is quite usual for the connector's soldering to loosen.

I doubt the connectors would be a problem as it stopped working on the second time I've ever inserted it into my PC. Also I will not open it as I can try for a replacement or refund if I cannot fix the issue in software.
Any other software fixes I can try? Google still comes up for data recovery for me...

If you can't get detected by diskpart, I'm personally not sure how I'd work at fixing it, I'd just send it back as the issue is most likely hardware-related, but that's up to you.

diskpart shows the USB as online now so I'll do some research about this issue and update this thread if I am successful in recovering my USB.

Thanks PowerChaos and O-T but the help you provided didn't fix the USB, even SD Card Formatter failed to format the USB. I'll be posting the USB back to the seller in the morning for repair/replacement.
