Hello All,

I am having trouble, I just upgraded my FreeNAS Server and am having a terrible time with it.  Here is the build

Corsair Carbide 100R Case

ASRock H370I Motherbaord

Pentium G4400

8GB of Kingston HyperX DDR4 RAM

6 - 4 TB WD Red HDDs

1 Intel SSD 32 GB for FreeNAS

Thermaltake 600w PSU

Symptoms

Everything plugged in and ready to go, hit the button, power on for 2-5 seconds then off, power on by itself then 2-5 seconds and repeat.

Trouble Shooting Completed:

1. Unplugged everything except RAM and CPU, same issue.

2. Tried pulling RAM sticks, leaving only 1 in, same issue.

3. Swapped to Corsair Vengeance RAM, same issue.

4. Pulled Power Supply and tried another, same issue

5. Put RAM in regular rig, BIOS sees all 8GB and boots

6. Put PSU into another PC, it works

7. Put CPU into Asus ROG Strix Z370-E, power on for a second then off

8. Tried a different power supply with Asus Board and G4400, powers on for a second then off

Based on what I have tried I am arriving at the conclusion that the CPU is bad, I did buy it as a returned item from Micro Center and so I am thinking that could be it.  Any thoughts you may have on this would be extremely helpful.

Thank you in advance.

I’m not sure if it actually is the cpu but it’s probably the motherboard cuz that’s what happens when a motherboard is like dead or something. Putting your cpu in a Z370 mobo won’t work no matter what you do even if it’s the same socket because different pin stuff and whatnot

EDIT: I think it’s the motherboard as it’s only for 8th gen cpus. Get an h110 insteaddddd

Remove the CMOS battery and put it back in after several seconds (maybe 30?).
No promises but worth a shot!

Tyler Moore, I am not sure why I didn’t think of that.  But that would be a good thing to try.

IdiotPenguin,

Well now I feel like an idiot, because I didn’t even check the support list for CPUs.  None of the boards I have support that CPU.  I guess I will just go get a different Processor.

My original plan was to get an H110 board, because some of those supported DDR3 which I have some of from the old server.  I couldn’t locate one that did that plus had the 6 SATA ports I wanted for the server.

Anyway an 8th Gen is only 10 bucks more I will go get one.  Thank you for the reply!

No problem man. I’m glad it wasn’t something more complicated lol

Spoiler

Intel and their freakin weird ass socket and cpu compatibility is weird but I still love em (for now)

It did in fact work when I picked up a new G5400 today.  I don't know who I am more mad at, myself or the guys at Micro Center in Chicago who sold me the board and the CPU and did not point out the fact that they were not going to work together.
