So I'm switching motherboards, and my previous board had an OEM version of windows that wont transfer over the license. I can get a free product key for Windows 10 Education through my university, my question is how would i go about reinstalling windows on my boot drive? Would i have to clear everything off of the drive then reinstall windows, or when i reinstall windows will all the old files get automatically deleted or replaced.I'm referring to the old OS files because im moving over from windows pro to education.

Anyways, if you are switching the motherboard and the is version of Windows I would strongly advise you reinstall Windows yourself manually to avoid any issues/ incompatibility in the future.

How would i do that? Do i need to delete everything off the boot drive before? Or can I just load in a windows install from a usb without deleting anything?

You can just load it from USB. In the menu for selecting the drive in the installer there is a option to wipe you disk before instalation.

Is that a necessary step though? What if i reinstall windows but dont wipe the boot drive?

It's not like it is hard, and most probably the installer will tell you to do that anyway. :)

I think there is some miscommunication, I know how to install windows to an empty drive. I'm just asking what do i do if the drive already has windows and other information on it.

You just proceed with the installation as if the drive was empty, and when you get to the menu where you can decide to which device to install windows you choose your hard drive, wipe it in the option in the installer and choose it to load windows onto. It's same as installing Windows to a clean drive.
