I am a first-time builder planning a rig, and I need some input on the parts I have selected.

Budget: My budget is around $800 US (not including monitor and peripherals); I am willing to go over although I would really prefer not to.

Aim: I plan on using this rig mostly for gaming. I mostly play games like fortnite and GTA V, but I currently play on XBOX. In the future, I could see myself doing a little bit of editing, but nothing much. I will also be using it for schoolwork, so I will definitely be browsing the Internet a lot and doing things with Microsoft Office.

Monitor: For the time being, I plan on purchasing one nice monitor and using that for everything, until I can get some more money to maybe buy a second, cheaper one. Currently, I am leaning towards the Dell S2417DG. I would like to spend no more than $400 US on a monitor. I would love to have all of these specs on my monitor as well, if possible:

  • 1080p Resolution
  • 144hz or more
  • G-Sync*

*I would consider buying a monitor without G-Sync if it were at a very good price point and included the other two specs I have listed. This could also help me save some money.

Upgrade: I am upgrading because I would like to be able to game and do work on a better computer. Currently I only have an HP laptop with an i7 processor and no graphics card. When it comes to gaming, it can’t do much. Also I would love to have a desktop instead of just a laptop.

So without further ado, here is my planned build:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600 3.4GHz 6-Corr Processor w/ Cooler

Mobo: MSI B350M GAMING PRO Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard

*This is a micro board, so I’m wondering if I should go for a normal B350. Would that be better for my build, and could I get it for the same/lower price?

Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 8GB (2 x 4GB)

HDD: Western Digital - Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5” 7200 RPM Internal Hard Drive

SSD: I need suggestions - I’m looking for about 250 GB (maybe even 240) or 500 GB for a good price.

GPU: Gigabyte - GeForce GTX 1060 3GB 3 GB Windforce OC Video Card

Case: Deepcool - TESSERACT SW ATX Mid Tower Case

*Also open for suggestions here. I found this case that has blue lights and looks very cool all for a very good price.

Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA G3 550W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply

Notes: I am not a professional at this kind of thing so I am very open to any suggestions you may have. I would love to save money wherever I could so if I could maybe downgrade my power supply or get things for a better price then please tell me. Thanks to everyone who helps.

I’ve started a new list using some of your suggestions, but I’d love to have a case with at least one side where I can see the PC parts, and the one you chose is closed off. Can you reccomend any cooler looking cases for the build.
