Computer freezes only while playing games

zbryant91

I've got a 6700k 1080ti build with a full custom water loop. Temps stay below 65c on both the CPU and GPU. Running at 1440p, and I can't figure out why I'm getting crashes everytime I play games. I don't think the issue is temperatures.

I've tried using ddu to fully wipe graphics drivers and reinstall, no change.

Tried removing the overclock on the cpu and GPU, no change.

Bought a new power supply, 750w evga, no change.

Tried reseating the cpu and ram, no change. Tried running the ram at lower speeds, no change.

I have 3 360mm rads, so 9 fans in the system. I've tried running them at full speed, half speed, low speed, no change. Still get crashes.

I do have the latest windows updates (windows 10 pro 64bit)

The issue has been ongoing for at least 6 months.

Extremely frustrated and need advice on what else to check because I don't know what to check or how to check out side of what's been done.

It's done it on pubg, fortnite, farcry 5, and destiny 2. Havent tried any others lately but it seems to happen on every game

I was just about to create a new post and noticed you might have a similar issue to mine. Happens only when gaming except for once the other night when I was on a Google Hangouts video call. Computer screen will freeze and a loud buzzing sound will come through my headphones. Only way to fix it is rebooting. Does that sound like your issue at all?

Somewhat similar, I normally don't get a buzzing noise but it just freezes. Audio sometimes continues to play, like I can hear teammates still chatting.

32gb of ram, not a capacity issue. Drivers are all up to date.

Hmm, not sure if we have the same issue. I don't know if this would have anything to do with yours, but have you done a memory check? Maybe try running Memtest86.

Cables are all right. Just changed cases 2 weeks ago so I imagine the problem would've changed.

Never used memtest. Guess I'll give it a go

Probably worth a shot just to rule it out. Just a heads up about the test, it can take quite a while to run. Probably at least an hour or so.

Ran memtest64 for 2 hours and got no errors. Then ran memtest86 and got a bunch of errors within 20 minutes. Does this mean ram or motherboard is bad? Or does it mean I need to add voltage? Can someone help decipher what the errors actually mean?

Also ran prime95 on blend for about 2 hours prior to this and had no failures.

Ran 1 stick for 1 pass and had no issue. Put the 2nd stick in the same slot and ran it by itself and I get errors. Tried increasing voltage, lower speed and still get errors on test 3 and 4 everytime. Should I try anything else or is it pretty solid chances that that stick is bad? Ram is 2666 and tried running it at 2133.

@zbryant91 Glad to hear it seems like you've figured your issue out!

Over the weekend I took all the parts out of my case, dusted everything off, reseated CPU (with new thermal paste), GPU, and RAM. I now don't get the buzzing sound when my PC freezes. Instead the screen goes black showing no signal, and I can still hear the sound from my game. Seems more similar to your issue now. How did you test the RAM specifically? You did the memtest86 with both sticks in the motherboard and then tested each one separately and that's when you saw the error? I'm wondering if mine is just a RAM issue, at least I'm hoping it's that over having to buy another GPU.

Yea, so I installed memtest86 on a flash drive and then you boot to the drive and it automatically starts running. First test was just running the computer as it was with both stick. I then tried increasing voltage slightly and still got errors. then tried reducing ram speed to 2133 instead of 2666. still had errors. so I pulled one stick out and reran the test at the rated 2666 and got no errors, stock voltage. pulled that stick out and put the other one in, got all sorts of errors within like 3 minutes. Told corsair and they approved the RMA within a few hours. New ram was just delivered, haven't installed yet, but I have not had any crashes or freezes since I pulled the bad stick out.

Ah ok, so you were actually having issues show up with memtest86 with both sticks of RAM in? I ran memtest86 once with both sticks in and didn’t get any errors. Maybe I should try running it again for a few passes and see if I get errors? Since I didn’t see any errors the first time I ran it it made me think my issue was related to my GPU ??‍♂️

Maybe, My errors all showed up within about 45 minutes, but maybe.

Ok, I'll try testing again and see if anything comes up. Let me know if you're still having issues after replacing the RAM stick.

Put my new set in yesterday and have no issues yet. Just played games and no memtest but no freezes.
