X99 ram upgrade

So, right now I have 4x4GB HyperX Fury DDR4 2133MHz in 4 of my 8 DIMM slots.

I'm kind of struggling to find a set of 4x4GB's. Is it fine to chuck in a single 16 GB stick or set of 2x8 GB, or would I lose some benefits?

No, 2x8 is fine, look at this for ddr4 ram.

welcome to the Linus Tech Tips forums!

musta been a reason to purchase the x99 platform.

weakening the RAM channel output will deffo kill any performance gain of increasing the RAM capacity.

is it fine sure, just won't be as 'snappy' or responsive. benefits of reliability (might notice programming issues/crashes) will be a thing of the past.

Thx for the quick replies!

Right now my modules are in the configuration above, but it looks like i can still keep quad channel if I add 2 extra modules like the suggestion form my manual below. (I have X99S SLI PLUS)

So I should be fine if i chuck in some bigger capacity as long as they are rated for the same speed and timing?

How would I correctly configure a 4x4GB + 2x8GB setup? I'm not sure if I trust myself here, just gonna ask to be sure :)

Update: I've found some single modules of pretty much the exact same RAM: (PC4-17000) CL14, as well as a 2x8GB kit, with the same speed and timing. Any reason to go for one of the other? With the 2x8GB kit I could upgrade again later if needed. Not sure if fact that they are sold as single modules or dual channel kits will affect anything (an old Linus video says it might). RAM is kinda pricey though, so that might make just grab 2 single modules of 4GB, but I'm not sure how they'll perform in a quad channel environment.

no need to be a 4way kit.

I installed 4 crucial ballistix 2400 mhz (individual sticks not kits) and they work along with a 4way kit of Ripjaws. (x99 sabertooth + 5820K)
