I was just wondering if anyone had ever successfully set up their cable tv to work over their LAN.  I read somewhere, probably reddit, that instead of coaxial you could use network cables to get the data to your cable box.

I live somewhere where I cannot run coax to the room with the tv.  I tried using cat5.  I was able to get the channel list/guide thing to come up but i couldnt get any channels to actually display.  It would just say it's acquiring signal.  Any thoughts or successes?

You could try something like this https://www.amazon.com/Extender-Converter-Adapter-sender-receiver/dp/B00LNLETMA but it's a tad expensive.

You could check with your provider and see if they have a wireless box. Basically it's a little 5GHz WiFi router and the box that will receive it's signal. If you work it right you could get them to provide it for free.

it depends.....most modern "cable" is an IPTV platform

they usually have their own DOCSIS tuner to connect to the CMTS and establish an IP connection that way and it's quite often the only way to connect to the CDN

if not then you need the tuner to receive the actual QAM based signal to decode it

FTTH and  xDSL based such as AT&T, Bell FIBE, and Telus Optik all use the home gateway to connect so can use either MOCA (ethernet over coax) or standard ethernet to connect
