Hello y'all! I need some advice. I want to jump into the world of VR, but first I want to make sure my PC will be fine running VR. I currently have a Radeon R9 390 8gb version, which I know is powerful enough to handle VR. But my CPU is what I'm worried about. I'm currently using a and Athlon x4 450 Tri core processor ( i know HUGE bottleneck). So will I need to upgrade my CPU to maybe ryzen, to be able to have a satisfactory VR experience?

Yes, you will need at least a 4 c processor for vr.

Get for example the r5 2600, that is very good.

Also you will probably have to buy new ram, because i cant imagine an old athlon using ddr4, so keep that in mind. Ryzen lowes fast ram, so get something like 3200mhz.

If you need something cheaper get something like r5 2400g or r3 2200g.

Okay, so the Oculus rift would not run well on my current specs?

it probably wont even run, as it has an hardware check before installing the software.

try this: https://support.oculus.com/1357437467617798/

Not with that CPU. I'd go for a hyperthreaded quad core minimum. Used hardware isn't a bad idea

A used 6700k should be pretty cheap and would work nicely, maybe even 4790k.

If you want new parts look at minimum r5 2400g, but 2600 would be better.

Okay so do you think a ryzen 3 1300x would be a good upgrade?

the minimum for a pc VR is the equivalent of an intel i5 .that's probably a ryzen 2500 or a 2600 ?

A 1200. I wouldn't want 4 cores without multithreading (idk what to call it for both) though.

Either 1200 or 1400. The 1300x isn't really good value since everything is overclockable. As I said, if you're comfortable with it used hardware is a great deal. The 2600 is an amazing CPU and will last a lot longer

That's an F in the profile pic

i didnt realize that r5 1400 also had hyperthreading/simultaneous multithreading. In that case i dont recommend the r5 1500x anymore, as it is also like the r3 1300x, a terrible value. I had some cpu usage issues with the i5 6600 in vr, so the minimum im recommending is the r5 1400. A 4c/8t cpu. If OP wants to buy used the minimum i would go for is the i7 4790, but the r5 1400 is about skylake level IPC, so it is a bit faster and can be easily overclocked.
