So my pc started being really slow in games all of a sudden, after installing and re installing drivers and there being no improvement, I just reset windows, this has made no improvement. I also discovered one of my ram slots has stopped working, so the pc wont boot if that slot is occupied. and another thing i've noticed is that the monitor takes a lot longer to turn on, at startup before it would show the bios splash but now by the time it comes on it is at windows log on. any ideas on what could be causing these weird issues.

i5 4460

gtx 960 4gb gigabyte

evga 500w psu

msi z97 gaming 3

a data ssd

windows 10 64

Sounds like a board problem, try using a different board if possible.

Could be a variety of things.

1.) Start off by resetting CMOS; remove the battery or remove the CMOS jumper if there's no dedicated button.

2.) Cross check your RAM, if you haven't already. Run the computer with one stick at a time, and run them individually in each DIMM slot so that you can get a clear picture of whether or not it's the board or RAM.

Update the thread if or when you've attempted these steps as there are quite a few more things that could be done..

Good luck!

so resetting cmos, caused no image on boot, so I had to use intergrated then tried the gpu and it fired up again, still with the delayed monitor auto on, ram appears to work in all slots but one, ran heaven benchmark and got 8 fps  which was much lower than usual, switched gpu to a different slot and got more normal results but game performance is still poor, gpu is at 100% load 40% power and about 15 fps whereas before all of this it would get 40-60 in the same situation.

The fact that a DIMM slot is dead makes me think of bent pins as that has been the case in far too many of the IT/support cases I've worked with where a slot is dead.

Before taking a closer look at the socket I'd try the following:

1.) As you're having poor performance in-game with the GPU at 100% I would double check the temperature of the CPU and GPU. HWmonitor is a great program for this.

2.) If the temperatures are A-OK, try excluding any faulty ports or peripherals that might be causing a slow boot. Unplugging any extra drives, changing the mouse and keyboard are all great steps but you could also run HDTune in case your primary drive is faulty.

3.) If you're still having issues, and no errors are showing up after an health test in HDTune then running the computer in a minimal configuration would be the next step. Run the motherboard, CPU, drive and RAM separately, outside the case. At the very, you can get a picture of whether or not it's the CPU or motherboard.

so slots aren't dead but after adding ram to different slots the pc either boots and displays an image 1st time or you can boot it 3 times then it displays an image with no signal input on the previous tries or the only way to get it to output an image is to switch the dvi port on the gpu then it displays 1st time. and regarding the socket, the cpu is the only cpu that has ever been in and its not been touched since the day it was put in. temps are ok , never over 60 on the gpu and 70 ish on the cpu. hd tune shows no problems. when using integrated graphics without the gpu installed the boot is much better( actually see bios splash), but any games are very laggy and stutter badly, and this isn't normal as csgo usually runs well (for integrated anyway) whereas this was totally unplayable.
