Hello and thank you for clicking into this topic. I have recently upgraded parts in my PC. I had an I3-4170 in my PC with a GTX 1050 ti, and when I play fortnite on ultra with it, it happily stays over 60. Around 90 fps I think it was. But now that I upgraded my cpu, ram and motherboard my fps got lower. I upgrade to an I5-8400 and that is a way more powerful cpu so this should not be happening. My fps averages around 50 now on the same settings as the i3. So it's really confusing me because that should not be right. I had an SSD while I was using the i3 but I sold it and have never used it with the i5 so would that be the problem? I doubt it. I reset the PC and still the same fps. Updated all drivers. No fix, so if anyone could tell me what's wrong here would be very much appreciated. Thank you

What motherboard do you have?

If it's an Asus board, make sure to disable some of the Power Saving features (like EPU)

- Have you checked in task manager if the clock speeds are okay?

- Run some cinebench R15 and compare your results to other i5-8400's. If the scores are good, your CPU isn't the problem.

- Do some thermal testing. Install AIDA64, go to stability test, run a test with only the FPU enabled and see if you don't reach any thermal limits/throtteling.

I think I found the problem, I ran AIDA64 Test like you said, as soon as I started it I got 28% throttling (Overheat Detected). So maybe I don't have enough thermal paste on there then? I let the test run for a few minutes more and it now says Max 58% Throttling. So Yeah definitely more thermal paste because I don't think I put on enough.

Your cooler isn't making good contact. Take the cooler off, clean it with alcohol, add new thermal paste (i prefer the big rice method), and add the cooler back on. When the cpu will stop throttling, your FPS-es will come back :)
