i have 5 2gb sticks of ram in a asus p55 delux with 6 sockets. i have an i7 965 with no OC but when i am in bios, windows, linux i only see 8 gb. i have swaped sticks and nomatter where the sticks are there is still only 8gb. but when i put a 6th stick in i get all 12gb. i dont want to have 6 sticks in because i need the 2gb stick for something else. and i dont want to buy more ram because it is a secondary meching build from parts from the dump. so i dont want to put in money

Try all your sticks in all your slots.

Is it perhaps getting upset because the first four run in dual-channel mode so the BIOS is rejecting the odd one out?

I don't know, I have never dealt with a 6 slot motherboard so have no experience with any quirks that might cause.  Its worth a try if the option is in the BIOS.

Obviously another option is to try and find a cheap used 2GB stick to populate the empty slot.

Fair enough, although in that case 8GB is unlikely to be much of a problem anyway.  Although I understand the frustration at having a stick you should be able to use but can't.

With any luck turning off dual-channel in the BIOS will sort it.

Totally understand that, I would too.

I used a spare board and RAM for my router but I had to remove a stick to get it to work.  Even though that means 4GB in a router (way overkill) I hate having that other 4GB just sat lying around doing nothing.

I've got 7Gb of DDR3 sitting around that's all most likely dead. :/
