I am thinking of getting an SSD as my main drive 250gb 860 evo samsung and I am wondering how I will go about transferring everything. I think I will reinstall windows but how do I reformat the old drive which will just be a storage drive? and how do I move games and programs from the hard drive to the SDD. I couldn't find any start to finish guide on the internet maybe you have some guide I could follow? Thanks in advance.

right click your drive in windows and press format to delete everything on it.

(open file explorer, go to my PC find the drive, right click and press format.)

you dont need to format. you dont even need to delete windows, if you have the SSD set as the boot drive and windows on the SSD it will look for windows on that and it wont matter of its on the old drive or not.

Ok but all game saves and settings in documents for example will they still be stored on the hard drive or will they also have to be moved if I move the game to the SSD

everyhing on the old drive will be exaclty as it is now, just windows will be inactive on the drive once you install it on the SSD (but if you boot from the old drive it will use the windows from the old drive)

if you want a steam game on the SSD its best to uninstall it and then reinstall it on the SSD and if the saves are in the cloud they will be kept or if they are in a folder that is not in the steam folder they will save. the only game I know that has the save in the steam folder in GTA 5 so youll want to back up that save file if you have that game and decide to put it on the SSD

Doesn't gta 5 save it in the documents but it is in the cloud so I guess it doesn't matter. Except the settings are also saved in the documents.

I just know I deleted gta 5 and the save went with it, when you uninstall a game the doc folder usually stays so i assumed it was saved in the steam folder

asnd when you install a new game on the SSD you have to pick the SSD as in install location when it asks, dont just press okay pick the SSD drive.

Ok thanks for your help just a question how much storage do you have because I am thinking about getting another storage drive as well but maybe that is overkill.

personally I only have a 1TB HDD and a 230GB SSD, my HDD only has like 10gb free and SSD has like 190gb free but I only use my SSD for games and shit needs an SSD to be faster. since an SSD only can read/write so many times before it dies I don't want to download a ton of shit on and remove it and keep doing that like I do on my HDD and have it die. it will still last years I just rather be safe and maximize the life of my parts since they cost so damn much \

I do want to get another HDD but i think im going to save up for a 1TB SSD instead just so I can have all my games on a SSD

Ok thanks for the help I have quiet a lot of games so they might not fit on my ssd but at least I will have the games that take the longest to load. Do you also have programs such as chrome steam discord etc on the ssd?

nope my SSD only has like 40gb taken up on it. the more stuff that actively reads/wrties on your SSD = it dying early

So when you save games and such is that also read and write. And what type of games programs do you have on your ssd just so I get a feel for how I should use my ssd.
