2) What size notebook would you prefer?

4) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?

b. Dislike: Dell - had a bad experience with back in 2006, im hesitant to buy a dell but ive heard they have gotten better so i may be willing to buy dell

5) Would you consider laptops that are refurbished/redistributed? No

 

6) What are the primary tasks will you be performing with this notebook? Programming, photo editing(photoshop and lightroom) and running 2-4 VMs

 

7) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places, leaving it on your desk or both? Mostly desk and around the house, weight isnt an issue

 

8) Will you be playing games on your notebook? If so, please state which games or types of games? No, probably not

 

9) How many hours of battery life do you need? 5+ would be great, but not a deal breaker

 

10) Would you prefer to see the notebooks you're considering before purchasing it or buying a notebook on-line without seeing it is OK? Buying online us ok

 

11) What OS do you prefer? Windows (Windows 7 / 8), Mac OS, Linux, Chrome OS, etc.

I will be installing linux

Build Quality and Design

 

14) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you? No as long as it doesn't look over gamery and has good build quality

 

15) When are you buying this laptop? Would like to buy soon, but willing to wait.

17) How much hard drive space do you need? Do you want a SSD drive? SSD 512gb min

 

18) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a DVD Burner, Blu-ray Reader or Blu-Ray Burner? No

 

Laptops ive considered

Dell xps 15 w/ 4k screen (Price 8750h, 4k, 1050, 512gb ~1800 + tax)

- worried about ssd performance

- i can buy a new 512gb samsung 970 pro for the price to upgrade 256 to 512 ssd on through dell

-thin laptop w 6c/12t processor for VMs

 

Lenovo Yoga 920 w/ 4k screen (8550u 4k, 1tb ssd ~1600 + tax)

- Worried about the 360 hinge wearing out and poor wifi performance

- worried about 8550u powerful enough running a few VMs

MSI gs65

  • Not a fan of the inverted motherboard

  • Seen review of poor build quality

  • Like 2 m.2

  • Pro - 6c/12t processor

Razer 15 (1080p 144hz, 8750, 512gb, ~2600)

  • Heat

  • Price

  • 4k option is too expensive

  • Pro - 6c/12t processor

Gigabyte areo 15x (8750, 4k, 1070, 512gb, ~2500)

  • Pro - Has 2 m.2

  • Pro - 6c/12t processor

If  you live in south east asia like me, don't buy Razer stuffs, the warranty process is a nightmare unless you buy from their official store online which is always alot more expensive.

If weight isn't an issue then go for mobile workstations with CFL-H CPU. Or Clevo P751TM/P775TM with 8700K from HIDevolution or ObsidianPC
