Hey everyone,

I'm currently looking for a good budget gaming cpu that's overclockable. I've read that some server-CPUs are great for that purpose but sadly I don't know the server CPUs good enough to decide what I should use.

I'd like to be able to play most games with 60 fps at 1080p and watch a YouTube vid (or smth similar) on a second screen.

My current AMD a8 6600k sadly isn't able to do both at the same time.. To be more precise, I can't even watch a 1080p YouTube livestream without my cpu dying..

The budget for CPU and MB would be around 250€ - 300€ (Euro, cause im from Germany ^^).

It would be perfect if the board would be ddr3 ram (cause then I could use the 16gb of ram from my current system) and kinda good for overclocking the specific cpu. My gpu is an gtx 1050ti which core clock I've overclocked to ~1960MHz and memory clock to ~4100MHz (atleast msi afterburner says so).

I hope you can help me out a little :)

Greetings from Germany and thanks in advance for your answers :)

--------

Edit: forgot to mention, that I'm looking for a used CPU... Cause I doubt there will be (actually) any good CPU with MB for that price.

Look for a 3rd or 4th Gen Intel Core i5 or i7 CPU/motherboard bundle on the used market.

Perhaps you should buy an i5 4690K (I think the 4790K is a bit out of your budget) and the best z97 motherboard within your budget.

Yeah, if you want to use that 16gb of DDR3, do look in that direction. Although, listen, I found an i5-6600k for 170e ish on mindfactory.de . You can check that out if you want. The board for that socket and chipset aren't expensive and many support DDR3 although BEWARE - you need to look for voltages on DIMM slots, the CPU etc just to make sure everything is compatible.

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-3162922/ddr3-ram-skylake-processors.html

But if you can find a good deal on older CPU's and mobos, go for it.

How much would your budget be if you were to build an entirely new PC from scratch?

There are 10 types of people in this world. Those that understand binary and those that don't.

So for example.. Is an i7 4790k with an msi Z87 GD65 still a good deal for 230€ if I wanna oc it?

I don't know the exact differences between z87 and z97 when It comes to overclocking..

@Rasbir Singh

the difference is simply that z87 was the board before the devils canyon refresh. 4790k will only work in a z87 board if you updated the bios already but if the cpu is already in the board and bios is updated there really isn't much difference. I personally think that is a really good deal considering you end up with the highest end cpu for that socket anyways.

So... a budget build for like 300 euros. I'll see what I can come up with.  Might have to reuse your storage, case and such but I reckon we can do it.

Ah thanks for the answer @palespartan. :)

So I won't have any disadvantages running it in the z87, considering it was running in that board before already, right?

nope from what I've seen out there the boards really didn't change much and the chip set features weren't too far off either.

from what he said he was just looking for cpu ram and mobo and if it uses ddr3 he wouldn't even need ram. So you should definitely be good.

Well it won't be a problem for me to reuse my storage (ssd and multiple hdds), case, GPU, and so on (maybe even my 550W China-PSU xD)

Oh I know but I was thinking try do brand new with the parts he wanted rather than second hand. Could make something pretty damn beefy for cheap.

It's a whole lot better than an A8 6600K and they're still good even when just used as a CPU. Integrated graphics would be useful too if your 1050ti ever died.

Hm that's right.. With my current overclocking I'm kinda stressing my GPU xD

Is the cpu even overclockable? (just asking, cause it got no "K")

And if yes how far do you think could I overclock it with that matx board?

cpu can be oc'd but you will need a different motherboard to overclock. I do think though that if its between that and a 4790k that the 4790k has better single and multi threaded performance though. But is definitely older now. I would personally see if you can step to a ryzen 5 to get smt and/or a b-series chipset for overclocking. No matter which way you go though anything is a huge improvement over what you're using. lol

Well that's... True... Everything's kinda better Than my a8 xD

How much impact would it have on a ryzen cpu to take 8gb first instead of 16?

Cause if I take only 8, I could dedicate more money to the MB and the CPU... And maybe I ccould even go up to a 350€ budget

And how about getting a used ryzen build?

I just found a ryzen 5 1600x with an Gygabite Gaming 3 B350 board for 200€

Or and ryzen 5 1600 with an Asus ROG Strixx B350 for 200..

Thwn I could use the rest to get some 8gb ram, sell my old stuff (if someone still wants to buy smth like that xD) and get another 8 gb

Go down to 8GB ram if you want to, make that step to ryzen 5. You won't regret it.

@palespartan @xriqn

definitely not a bad choice. But something to remember when shopping for ram for ryzen is that it does like faster ram so you might want to see if you can get something faster than the 2400 base speed even if it means spending a bit more money. And definitely make sure you run it in dual channel.
