Why can I overclock the g3258

I can overclock my g3258 on an H81 motherboard. I knew about this before I bought them and I actually rely on it to get decent performance.

But why?

 

I'm under the impression that all intel processors need a high end chipset to overclock. In the 1150 socket, I thought I would need a z87 motherboard to overclock. Can anyone help explain why the g3258 has this odd ability to overclock on any board?

Because it's an anniversary edition CPU for the Pentium name. To make it special, Intel unlocked its core clock multiplier. Of course, no one will spend so much on a motherboard if they are buying a cheap dual core, so they make cheap boards capable of overclocking the G3258 as well.

Not much point in releasing a cheap, special edition, unlocked CPU if only boards more expensive than the CPU can overclock it. 

 

They unlocked overclocking on other chipsets so you could overclock the G3258 on them. It actually ended up with a lot of board manufacturers allowing you to overclock any unlocked CPU on the cheaper chipsets, then Intel trying to block it for a while.

Yeah, I remember you could overclock ix-6xxx chips on budget Z boards for a while

I imagined a K on the end of that 6xxx so i was like that's what Z boards are made for anyway. then I realised there wasn't actually a K there.

If it does then AMD Ryzen wont be so appealing
