I've been using a DLNA to access some videos on my phone due to my small amount of storage and ease of use. I was wondering if there was anything that would allow me to remotely access and view the data on another server other than my home WiFi (ex: sitting in Starbucks and streaming downloaded videos from pc to phone.) Don't roast me for not doing research, because I've spent about 20 min searching, but nothings come up. I'm pretty confident its my lack of vocabulary related to the subject bottle necking my searches, but nevertheless I need some help.

All I know is that this is possible. I have thought about trying out something small, more with music than anything else. I have setup UPnP server with my desktop PCs Foobar which streams music to other UPnP capable devices/apps/softwares. In settings for this plugin there's tab for "Internet Access". It requires IP/hostname, login and password to be setup. Haven't tried it any further, but I guess it wouldn't require that much work.

While looking into how this would work, I noticed that my (paid) app for UPnP on Android (BubbleUPnP) also offers server software. This app works as handler and can play video files with external video app. It seems to work, for audio at least since I could connect to test server and play some clips.

Then there's Plex. Again, I haven't looked into this one either, but there are lot of users on the forums who are running Plex servers for their media. Just on the glance Plex might be the easiest to setup, and easiest overall plus free for your own stuff. Paid version is the thing if you want to add commercial stuff.

Do note that when using public wifi, hosts tend to block sites/ports which are known to be used by streaming services. For obvious reasons.
