openmediavault - what now?

Hi all -

So I finally finished putting together my home server based off openmediavault. Everything is running great, I have 3 disks in a RAID 5 and created an administrative user for myself as well as a group for my family.

What now? Networking settings? File system stuff? Also what do the plugins do? I'm a big noob at this kind of stuff.. help is much appreciated.

thanks!

It's always good to set a static IP address - personally I have a DNS/DHCP server for which I make DHCP reservations, so I can control it all on there if i need to re-arrange my IP addressing. But if you work with minimal static IP's, statically assigning it is much easier.

I'd also make sure that you configure your security settings according to what works best for you, while still maintaining the best security.

Personally on my NAS, Guest has ReadOnly to all of the media shares, but no access to the computer backups.

Service accounts for my VM's such as my seedbox only have RW to my Incoming/Dump folder, no permission to anything else.

My backup account (which my machines use to initiate the backup) only has access to the Backups folder, no permission to anything else. If you're going to give your family Read/Write to something such as say family Photos/Videos,etc..then m

The principle of least privilege. Only what it needs to run and nothing more.

One cool thing you can do with a local NAS is install a NFS/iSCSI based PXE boot recovery distro. Then if you need to net boot a computer you can just do so at will and land in a friendly custom environment. In theory this works with Windows (I mean ewwh why? but you know.. sometimes needed) kind of a pain to setup though.
