I am thinking about adding another drive to my pc either a 1TB or a 3TB drive. My question might be stupid but how would I go about having a second drive software wise. How do I bulk move recordings from shadow play and make them save to my new drive,  how do I move games without affecting save games. And would a 3TB drive be slower than a 1TB and if so how much of a difference would it make. And how does the formatting in the BIOS work with a new drive.

PS. I build my PC so the problem is not the hardware aspect but the software with all the formatting etc.

Save games are generally held within program files, would the drive be added to the current list or will it be replacing one within the tower

if you got the same HDD type for 1TB and 3TB there shouldn't be any noticeable difference in performance

when it comes to formatting new drives i use a sata to usb connector (to connect the HDD through a usb plug) then format it through disk management and then plug it in internally so its already formatted

Ok I am looking to add disk space because my drive is nearly full and with big titles coming I don't want to have to keep uninstalling old games. Sorry for noob question but how and to what format do I format it to because windows installation did it automatically with my original drive.

Aren't 3TB drives slower that 1TB drives or is that just a myth or misinformation?

they may be slower but my 4TB single drive is only just worse than my 2 1TB drives in a stripped array (joined to maximise speed), will be removing the 2 x 1 TB drives for 2 x 6TB drive

this is inside of disk management

you right click on a drive that says that it is unformatted (or something similar, maybe empty) then there should be an option to create / format the disk partion and its quite simple after that just follow what it says choosing the options that suit you

i haven't tried installing it internally first (as i have only replaced drives so need them both connected) but it looks like it should recognise the device and it should show up in disk management even if it isn't Initialised.

if the disk arrives and it isn't initialised you will be prompted to do that inside of the disk management program. generally select a GPT style of format (if drive is over 2 TB it will need to be GPT format as MBR isn't usually supported on these drives)

Depends on more precise construction rarely told by manufactures.

If having similar multiplatter construction with lower data density platters 1TB drive would have lot lower sequential transfer rate.

Again if 3TB drive uses three platters while 1TB drive only one STR is identical.

Some synthetic test seek time difference from heavier R/W head of multiplatter drive is easily mitigated in real world performance by having same amount of data (say all game files) in fewer cylinders needing smaller head movement to reach them all.
