So, as the title states, I'm rejoining the PC Master Race. After consoling it up for roughly 16 years, I've decided to build a computer.

I believe my last build was with my dad back in 2002. I was pretty fluent at building Lego masterpieces back then so I was very integral (or so I thought) to the process. By the way, does anyone remember GameSpy? Medal of Honor: Allied Assault was the real deal! Soldier of Fortune 2: Multiplayer Test also kept me busy for some time.

Anyways, here is my targeted build. Any suggestions are appreciated! Price is not too big of a concern. I'm in no hurry so I plan to keep an eye on the market waiting for good deals.

Motherboard: Depends. I do not know if I am going to get a K-series CPU or not. If I get a K-series CPU, I want a motherboard that will do the work for me as I prefer to not manually overclock myself. I am not deadset on these choices, but I have narrowed them down to the three listed. I'm open to other suggestions.

ASUS ROG STRIX Z370-E Gaming
ASUS ROG MAXIMUS X HERO
ASUS ROG STRIX H370-F

CPU: I do not plan on over clocking my CPU out of the box. More so wanting to have the option to overclock down the road if need be in a few years. Here are my options:

Intel i7 8700

Intel i7 8700k

Intel i5 8600k

CPU Cooler: I received a CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Evo for free. It's what I'm going with for now. I understand that this will not be efficient enough for an overclocked CPU, but it cuts down on cost now. It can be updated later. As mentioned, I don't plan on overclocking right out of the gate. Any suggestions for a future cooler to accommodate that are appreciated!

GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 1080 Gaming X 8G (thanks eBay Father's Day Coupon, scored it for $499!)

RAM: 16 GB (2×8) DDR4 3000. Open to suggestions. A friend of mine is donating an old DDR4 8GB stick of RAM for the time being. I'm in no rush on this front due to the prices, but I will be actively searching. Let me know what to look for!

Storage: Open to suggestions.

Cruical MX500 SSD

2 TB 7200 RPM SATA

PSU: Open to suggestions.

EVGA SuperNova 850 80+ Gold. Fully modular.

Case: NZXT S340

Monitor: For starters, a 24" 1080p 144hz. Not sure what that will be yet, but those are my parameters. I'll look at snagging possibly a 4k and/or GSync around Black Friday.

Before I forget, this is strictly a gaming computer. My wife has her iMac for photo/video editing and all that nonsense. I have my own PC (or soon will) against her better wishes. I'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions! I'm aiming for a system that can run 1440p at 144hz effectively, possibly 4k in the future. Thanks for your time.

Edit: Rough budget of 2000 USD.

well, you'll have to add a cooler if you get an 8700k, and frankly the cooler that comes with the 8700 is one step below awful.

personally I'd drive a z370 Strix, a 8700k, a beefy Noctua cooler, the 1080, the SSD/HDD, and PSU.

3000MHz RAM is just fine, shoot for a matched pair SKU of 16GB.

This was kind of the direction I have been thinking about going. You think I would be able to run the 8700k with a 212 Evo without OCing until I decide to beef up my fan?

it'll be loud, it'll warm, but the 212Evo should keep it below thermal throttle. expect about 80C i imagine, but i'm sure someone has a chart.

They have the new G1+ models now and as far as I'm aware all issues have been resolved.

As for the ram you said your friend is donating you a stick.? Just make sure you get the same stick for your second, if they are different speed you might run into issues trying to run them in dual channel

Yeah, I'm just going to match it when RAM prices aren't so high.  If unable to, I'll just buy 16 GB on down the road.

I am a big fan of that case.  The S340 is going to be cramped and I do not want to go AIO for cooling.
