can you manage it with the volume control utility thing for pulseaudio? i believe it's called pavucontrol.

I've tried to use pavucontrol but whenever i run it, it says connecting and it never connects and I've started the pulseaudio daemon

Post exact error messages instead of

How did you configure pulseaudio? Are you on a virtual machine or on real hardware? What exact distro is it?
