Windows Update Fails

Go to solution Solved by sazrocks,

Does it say why it failed? Do you have sufficient space on your drive?

Hey forum,

I first noticed this issue when I got a message that says "Your device is at risk because it's out of date and missing important security and quality updates. Let's get you back on track so Windows can run more securely. Select this button to get going." I know this isn't a huge issue from a security standpoint, because I have an external antivirus (ESET) and I don't browse shady sites that often, but it's getting annoying. Every time I try to update windows, I get a failed update notification. The current update version is KB4103727.

Thanks for any help!

Main PC:

Peripherals/Other:

ASUS VG27AQ • G PRO K/DA • G502 Hero K/DA • G733 K/DA • G840 K/DA • Oculus Quest 2 • Nintendo Switch (Rev. 2)

Got any questions about my system or peripherals? Feel free to tag me (@bellabichon) and I'll be happy to give you my two cents.

I have 33.3GB left on my drive. Is that enough? Also, it doesn't say why it failed.

Depending on the update and your PC config, that may not be enough.

Clear C:\users\your_profile\Local\temp
C:\Windows\temp files

C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Downloads\

Run Disk cleanup (with admin privileges)

After disk cleanup finishes, restart and try to download and install updates. Be mindful of the error code if it fails again.

If you're already running Windows 10 1803 you can use the Storage Sense utility within Settings. Much quicker than Disk Cleanup. Windows key + R "winver" without the parentheses.

Update: I sat on the phone with tech support for about and hour and a half yesterday, and managed to fix the problem. I just downloaded the Media Creation Tool, made a copy of windows, and re-downloaded all the updates from there. Thanks for the suggestions!

If anyone has this issue in the future (as I did), refer to the Windows Update catalog, linked here (KB4103714). This is the latest version of the update that was unable to download in this situation. To apply it, identify the version of Windows you're using, whether it be x86, x64, or Windows Server of those two variants, then download the corresponding file (if you don't get what that means, look at the names of the updates listed on this page as they're version specific).

Once the file is downloaded, right-click on it, goto properties, then hit the "unblock" button (an odd feature of Windows to "protect" against malicious downloaded files, whatever that means), then hit the "OK" button and run the update file.

While it runs, it'll look like the Windows XP updater of olde and may bring back fond memories. When it finishes, reboot your machine -- and that's it.

Note: If you have any difficulties or feel as if your Windows installation is corrupt, run sfc /scannow and dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth, then reboot before installing this update.

Let me know if this has been helpful (because it really should work and there's no reason it shouldn't)!

Forgot this isn't Markdown. Too much Discord. Also realized the person resolved their issue, but no one reads anymore, right Colton? Right.
