My friend and I were discussing if I should buy a new gpu or a new cpu I have a gtx 630 gpu and a amd phenom 2 4x 965 black edition. My friiend is really against amd and says that I should get atleast a i3 but I think i should get a new graphics card. The problem with a i3 is that I have a amd motherboard so that would add more to the cost of that.

How badly do you need a GPU upgrade vs a CPU upgrade?

If you need both equally badly, just save up enough cash and redo your system entirely.

ANY new CPU will require a new motherboard AND New RAM, you have an AM3 socket motherboard which is not used by any CPU worth buying regardless of whether you go Intel or AMD. That said a new GPU is pointless because it will be bottlenecked by that old ass CPU, time to replace everything.

Thanks for the tip than Ill try to save up.

if you hunt around now you may be able to find a good deal on First Generation Ryzen CPU's, I picked up a Ryzen 7 1700 for $200 USD a few months ago which is 2/3rds the price of the 2700 that replaced it and is maybe 5-10% better. Intel CPU's can hit higher core clocks so they do tend to get better framerates in games but the ryzen CPU's and there insane core counts make things feel smoother.

Intel CPUs have higher single-threaded performance over Ryzen which is why they're the best for gaming. It's not all about clocks, Intel proved that back when the FX series was a thing.

Ryzen is definitely better value though, you get more performance per dollar. Intel also has comparable multi-threaded performance to Ryzen.

If you want to pump your current system to the max (without a new motherboard, ram etc...) you could always bump up to an amd 8350.  While it's not the greatest cpu it's 8 core and should give you a bump in games that are cpu heavy.

I'm currently running an amd 965 with a gtx 780 as my secondary gaming rig.  I'm tempted to push it to an amd 8350 if I can get one for dirt cheap.

And maybe after the cpu what gpu do you recommend that wont get bottlenecked?

Nvidia suggest a GTX 1060 for 1080p 60 FPS gaming of PUBG, I would go 1070 for a well balanced system that will play all your games well at 1080p with some higher refresh rates. no point in buying something that is "just enough" in PC's if you ask me.
