Hi,

I recently managed to snag a pc with an i7-965EE and a rampage II extreme along with a asus gtx 560 for a total of 400 sgd while shopping for an office pc from a pc hardware exporter.

I figured for 400 sgd it was quite a steal, regardless of it being a couple generations behind hardware wise. I shudder at the ram speeds tho, 3x2gb 1066 ddr3

Now the question is how well will the i7-965EE hold up in the years to come. So far the experience has been pretty smooth, except the pc sounds like a wind tunnel when running on load.

Should i invest in a new heatsink for the cpu, something like an x40 or a noctua cooler to keep it cool and silent under a mild overclock? Or would the investment seem irrelevant after awhile?

Invest in a new cooler and overclock that baby, replace all the fans with Noctua's or Be Quiet's and you'll be set, the graphics card could be due for an update though.

You could also find another 6 gig kit of Ram if you want, the 1066 speed shouldn't be too much of a bottleneck (too little for you too notice, probably).

the graphics card isn't really an issue since it would be mainly for office use. i was thinking of leaving it as it is seeing as it won't net me any gain to swap the card with something newer like a 7770 or 260x,

Okay, that computer should last you forever as an  office PC then.

1066 will bottleneck you some if you dont tighten the timings up. these boards really loosen the timings for some reason @ 1066 stock.

you can also try 1600mhz 9-9-9-24-1T @ 1.65v and see if that works alot of DDR3 kits will run @ those speeds quite nicely with a bit of voltage increase.

yeah i'll get around to oc-ing the ram slightly.

i guess i would upgrade around the i7 then. Probably add an sdd too. According to the benchmarks i see, the i7-965 still ranks rather high up.
