Hello,

So I just bought and received a new computer (Alienware Aurora R7: i7 8700k, 16GB 2666mhz ram, GTX1080ti and a 1080p monitor @ 240hz). But so far I've noticed one annoying issue!

This happens whenever I load in any game. The sound seems to be coming from the PSU aswell.

Any ideas wheter this is normal?

It's THIS sound

Thank you.

Kind regards Nick.

From what I can hear, if it has stopped or has been going over a long period of time as a very faint noise, it could be one or more of the caps venting after bulging (although this is not likely from listening, though it is hard to tell).

Could also be something rubbing against or otherwise interfering with the blades of the fan, or quite possibly even the bearings in the fan housing have gone bad. - Try stopping the fan with something insulated or non conductive (very carefully) such as a toothpick or other small piece of wood or plastic to see if the noise stops, if it does, you know its the fan.

Otherwise it is going to be one of the coils making a noise as it is loaded, or stressed, more. Does this only happen when you have a high load on the system?

But no matter what the issue is, I would personally replace it anyway with at least an 80+ Bronze supply, higher if you can afford it, that is rated well for your system.

According to your system config, I Would suggest a wattage of at least 500w, but if you can afford it 600/650w (from a reputable manufacturer) would be better to give you some more headroom for your current config, as well as any future upgrades and overclocks.

Hello,

Thank you for the response. I found this video on YouTube from someone else, but it's basically this sound it makes.

It might be the fan hitting the plastic insulation, or one of the components died and/or is dying. Possibly a coil/transformer. I would replace the PSU

Let's not hope so, it's a factory build. So I figured it wouldn't be as much of a hassle as assembling my own.

Under load only, basically when on desktop there's no sound. Only when in game, the strangest part is with GTA V for example when I'm in game (storymode) it starts making the sound. When I click "esc" to menu it IMMEDIATLY stops. Every single time, this is so weird. The amount of "load" also really influences the sound, when I play GTA it's way louder than if I would play PUBG or World of Warcraft.

The computer is less than a week old, so I might wanna contact Dell about this, I just wanted to hear people's opinion on this. As it's really annoying, and actually worth sending my PC back to Dell. Because if it would be normal, it's a rather annoying little issue.

System configuration:

Processor: i7 8700K (not overclocked in software, the standard 3.8 GHz)

Graphics card: Geforce GTX 1080ti 11GB

PSU: Bronze 850W liquid cooling chassis

RAM: 16GB (2x8GB sticks @2666mhz )

Storage: 256GB M.sata SSD and 2 TB storage

So are you saying that this is a brand new system from manufacturer? Because if so, you should definitely contact the retailer/manufacturer ASAP about a possible system fault and warranty replacement/repair as this noise should not be happening under load, unless it is just a small amount of coil whine from a chinesium PSU.

Just as I was typing this I also thought that this noise may be due to not so great mains power quality coming into your home. If you have a pure sine wave UPS that can deliver enough power for this system which also has a power smoothing feature, or even a good quality standalone power conditioner then it could be worth trying to use that in line with your system to see if it is just 'dirty' power coming from your supplier.

But bottom line is, if you are out of warranty period, I would buy a replacement PSU from a good brand off of Amazon, swap it out and see if that fixes the problem and if not then it quite possibly is whine from another component, such as the GPU. If you still have warranty, contact retailer or dell support, moan at them and they should replace/repair as that does not sound good.
