Time Machine unbearably slow

Time machine is backing up unbearably slow on my mac (took all night to do 60GB of 1.1 TB). I’m backing up over a gigabit network to a NAS that is fully capable of saturating a gigabit connection (113+MB/sec), yet the mac only ever reaches like 5MB/sec, and even then only does so every few seconds in ”pulses”. I’ve already disabled the backup service setting itself to a low priority, and have tried rebooting into safe mode then back again and still no change. Any suggestions?

Have you run a diagnostic in the Mac drive? I've had experience with client machines like this, most of the time was a failing drive. Was faster to manually extract than to use Time Machine.

 

I'd your NAS using any type of specific drives?

If by diagnostic you mean running first aid in disk utility, i just tried that, the report came back fine and now its backing up at ~100KB/s.

 

My nas drives are just NAS grade 7200RPM sata hard drives. 

 

Edit: My NAS is also brand new; I built it on wednesday, and is pretty much completely empty.

No I meant the bike in MRI tool. It's been a while, but I think it's Command +Shift +R when you go to boot up. It might be D instead of R, but it's close enough. Apple website likes to say it's only available up technicians, but anyone with 3 fingers can access it.

TimeMachine over networked drives has always been slower than internal/external drives that are directly connected to your machine. 

 

TimeMachine is also built to be lightweight in the system, so it essentially never uses the maximum speed of your drive to make backups. 

 

Further, if this is the first time the drive is being backed up, TimeMachine does its indexing which takes forever. 

 

The system is designed and works best when it is updating/changing an existing file structure, not backing up a TB in one go.

It worked fine for the (now full) time capsule that was also on the network.

I thought I disabled this behavior by running 

sudo sysctl debug.lowpri_throttle_enabled=0

The drive was backed up to a time capsule, so wouldn't this already be done? Or would it have to do it for each drive it backs up to?
