Recently I have discovered that my D drive from my computer disappears and reappears after several boots and have hence have decided to give it for repair to a technician. I have an external wd passport that I just bought and would like to backup both my C drive and my D drive to the external hard drive in case my drives have to be replaced. Could anyone kindly guide me by telling me the steps I should take to back up completely my C and D drives to my external HDD.

Well what data do you have on your drives? Do you want to copy the operative system as well? What I would recommend is to transfer all important files and have them on the backup. The programs and the operative system doesn't need backing up since they can be redownloaded. Possibly save some special resources if you've got heavily configured programs or some that have a limited download source.

I have been very pleased with Macrium before: https://www.macrium.com/reflectfree

You can image the drives using their free software and then restore them to another drive if needed later. You can even image the OS while its running with VSS. The software wizard is pretty simple to follow to do a full backup but happy to help if you have any questions.
