New GPU slow as hell

Go to solution Solved by Guest,

I think I'm just going to send it back, thanks for the help guys, but Im pretty sure I have a defective unit

Hey everyone, so I got a 7870 black edition which has a tahiti LE gpu, and I just installed it in my PC, here are my specs:

MSI 970A-G46

AMD FX 4100 OCed @4.4Ghz

CORSAIR Vengeance 2x4Gb

CORSAIR CX600

SEAGATE Barracuda 7200.14

COOLERMASTER Hyper 212 evo #2x COOLERMASTER Blademaster 120

COOLERMASTER Storm Scout (v1)

My screen resolution is 1600x900, so I play all my games at this resolution, but have crappy performance: in Unigine heaven I am getting half the score, I should be getting based on online benchs. At 1600x900 in battlefield 3 on ultra I'm getting 40ish FPS. I have tried reinstalling my OS, different drivers versions, swapping the 6 pin connectors, use stock clocks on my mobo and GPU, overclocking and underclocking. Could it be a CPU bottleneck, I doubt it based on the NCIXcom "what CPU is best for gaming" I have more processing power than I need. Not enough PSU wattage? could be, I have a CX600 which is bronze certified, so 120 watts of the 600 are dissipated and lost as heat so that leaves me with 480 watts, but again, I've heard that's enough. I have no idea what it could be , could it be some sort of half DOA?

It's probably just the CPU, bulldozer quad cores aren't good for gaming, they are out performed by the cheaper quad core phenoms consistently .

Just to make sure, run the Bioshock infinite benchmarking tool & crank all the settings up to Ultra except Post Processing keep it to normal.

You should get an average of exactly 50 FPS.

What card did you have before the HD7870? IF you had an nVidia card before the HD7870, then the remnant of the nV driver may be messing up its performance. Uninstall the driver via Control Panel -> Uninstall a Program. Reboot and run Driver Sweeper. click on AMD and nVidia display drivers and execute. Reboot and reinstall the latest driver (Cat 13.3 Beta3), reboot yet again and see what's next! Also bear in mind that you have the FX4100 which does not do well in benchmarks which rely on some CPU prowess. It is decent enough in games, but still pretty weak overall........and it will be reflected in games and benchmarks. And no, don't fret over your PSU, the Corsair CX600, while certainly not the best 600W PSU around, is more than sufficient for the HD7870 Tahiti core GPU which does take about as much power as a HD7950/7970.

The wattage the gpu is rated for is the actual output wattage. No need to subtract efficiency. I would have to agree that it is the cpu although you should do some test to confirm this so that you don't buy a new cpu even though it might not be needed
