Greetings.

Just want to bring attention to Rtings real world OLED burn in test update.

So it would seem a high contrast static UI game like Fifa18 starts showing obvious 'burn in' at week 12.

This equates to a person playing a single game with high contrast static UI, and only that game, for 4.5 hours a day every day for about a year before burn in starts to appear.

A game with less aggresive UI's, in this case CoDWW2, shows no burn in after 2240 hours. Thats almost 500 days of playing the game 4.5 hours a day non stop.

Now i dont know about you , but i dont consider that an issue. I doubt its very common for som1 to spend that much time using their screen to ONLY play that 1 game for that long each and every day without any significant amount of other content at all. Those that do, well by all means avoid current OLEDs, but for any1 else considering a 55" or larger screen to buy for gaming, if you have the money theres no reason at all not to consider OLED.

I decided to make this post since i once again see Linus spreading info about OLED burn in like its some major issue (Micro LED techquickie).

Even in the most extreme worst case scenerios for OLED, its takes hundreads of hours for burn in to occure. Constant CNN channel use for example will result in 'burn in' in around 560 hours of just showing the CNN channel.

'Normal'* use sees no burn in even after 2240 hours of use.

*general TV, movies, sports.

Food for thought

It's still a major issue for mobile devices. Go to your local BestBuy and you'll ought to see a Galaxy device on display with severe burn in, even if the in-store demo is showing most of the time when at idle. Then you have the status bar and keyboard area where burn in will commonly appear as those spots are shown or the entire life of the device.

Outside of games, I probably have my taskbar in the same position with screen-on for upwards of 12 hours a day. That would burn in within a matter of months going by these results.

I would also point out that lasting about a year before burn-in is not very impressive to me. 1 year is a very short time for a monitor to last before having these sorts of issues. In terms of people being worried about "if you leave your OLED monitor on a static image overnight it will burn in!" of course, this is entirely wrong, but as far as burn-in not being a problem in the long term, it still seems to be, at least for computer usage.

To be honest , mobile devices dont need the superior image quality of OLED. its a mobile , not a TV/Monitor.

OLED is an incredibly poor choice for mobiles, not only for the 'burn in' but also peak brightness.

Auto hide taskbar, screensavers

i use it with my plasma.. No burn in

And again 1 year of CONSTANT unrealistic use.

I don't use auto-hide taskbar because I don't like it. I also have monitoring programs, browser bookmarks bars, many things that will accumulate large amounts of screen time over the course of a year.

Screensavers won't work, my screen isn't on just because I leave it on, it's on because I use it all day.

It's not that unrealistic, since every part of the screen degrades separately. Maybe the rest of my screen changes between many tasks, but the constant use of a single program will still apply to sections of the screen (taskbar being the most obvious example, but there are plenty of others, as I mentioned).

Then again I'm not the average user... I have image retention problems on my LCDs, even ;) so perhaps OLEDs just aren't suitable for my type.

Ah yea, well in ur case indeed OLED isnt a good choice. Though if u have image retention on even an LCD i suspect urs is an edge case scenerio.

For your average gamer though, OLED shouldnt be dismissed due 'burn in', its about as much of a problem as it was for CRT and Plasma and those, especialy CRT, were used for years without issue for the average joe.

Its just a shame that people, like and including LInus, are unduely spreading 'worry' about burn in, which doesnt help with the 'hopefully' eventual phasing out of the POS VDU tech that is LCD.
