Question about Audio Levels between devices.

With my PC, I would plug in my headphones, and they sound just fine, but just a little on the quiet side. Now when I connect the headphones to my iPhone 7, the sound is much louder, with a lot more definition. I am quite confused as to why this is happening. Could purchasing an amplifier for my PC help fix this?

The headphones I am using are the Sony MDR-XB950N1.

It depends on the sound cards in each of the devices. As long as you can live with it, theres nothing to do. You could purchase an amplifier, but I would think that superflous.

Also, do you get the same effet with other headphones? If this only started happening recently and you really can stand it invest in a soundmcard for your pc.

Since I am to lazy to put something interesting here, I will put everything, but slightly abbreviated. Here is everything:

Yes the same effect does happen with other headphones.

Yeah. So it's just the difference between your phones and you PCs soundcard. As long as you can live with it, you don't need to do anything.

There's really only 2 variables that control the loudness of a device. You have the output voltage and the output impedance of the device. Output impedance describes how much voltage is lost, and output voltage describes how much you had to begin with. iirc, the iphone is about 1 volt, with negligible output impedance.

A little known trick with computer audio is that installing/configuring the official audio drivers for a motherboard (rather than generic windows drivers) can enable the headphone amp circuit, which can increase the voltage and decrease the output impedance, making it actually louder.
