Hello all, I am going to get the WD Green PC SSD M.2 SATA III 120GB

link below:

https://pricespy.co.nz/product.php?p=3945474

Question is I want to get an enclosure that is not a cheap and nasty, as I want to use this M.2 as a portable storage device as it has more storage and faster speeds than a flash drive unless you spend lots.

Any suggestions?

Its a basic Sata 3 SSD just on the m.2 interface. You would be better off getting a regular Sata SSD and an enclosure.

What about as an external device you would still have to get some enclosure for the ssd right?

One last thing does the enclosure for that SSD limit its capabilities? also if i get an enclosure with USB 3.1 output as my motherboard has it  aswell would that make any difference?

If you have the ability to make use of USB 3.1 then go that route to increase maximum speeds.

It won't make it any faster than USB 3.0.  SATA drives generally cap at or around 520MBps. USB3.0 has a bandwidth of 640MBps.

I was thinking of getting http://www.adata.com/en/specification/456 would this be fine?

M.2 isn't an interface, it's a form factor. Common mistake. For future reference:

Form factors: 3.5 inch, 2.5 inch, M.2 (and its different keys), PCIe card, mSATA

Interfaces: SATA, PCIe

Protocols: AHCI, NVMe

A PCIe drive (which is usually in the M.2 form factor) can run in either NVMe or AHCI mode. There isn't much reason to use the latter though, unless you're short on PCIe lanes.

The reviews on that aren't great. I'd recommend this one. I've bought a lot of enclosures over the years, and aluminum ones are definitely my favorite.
