X99, XEON & ECC?

I've done a ton of looking on Google and elsewhere, but can't get any concrete answers. 

I have a Intel Xeon E5 2630 V3 on the way from EBAY and an ASUS X-99 A-II motherboard sitting next to me. I'm going to be doing an Unraid deployment with a Windows VM for streaming and NAS (possible PFSense) VM. The one thing I can't find is ECC requirements/compatibility. 

I know the XEON supports ECC - but is it a requirement of the Motherboard to support it as well or is the CPU enough? Is it necessary for this type of deployment? Will the Xeon work just fine with non-ECC RAM?

Just make sure it's unbuffered or unregistered memory. ECC function is disabled if mobo, CPU or RAM doesnt support it, but you can still use the RAM as usual.
