I have a set of ATH-M40Xs and want to break them every time they contact my head, they hurt to put on. Would the Hd599s from sennheiser be a worthy option for me.

would i need a amp/dac such as the Fiio E10k to run these, I have a really old motherboard: the Z68MA-D2H-B3

I have the 595's, and if the basic construction hasn't changed much to the 599 then they are extremely comfortable - they don't deathgrip your head and other than the obvious mass (I mean, they aren't zero-weight), you can barely feel them on. The cups are also replaceable on ebay for cheap, or from Sennheiser direct for only $10.

Only had to replace my cups once when they tore about 6 months ago, and I've had these now for over 7 years.

thank you, do you use a dac/amp or any software such as dolby atmos

I have an asus xonar d2x (it doesn't have a dedicated headphone amp built in, unlike the DX), so I can't really comment on a specific amp/dac setup unfortunately.

I tried dolby atmos, and although the content that used it definitely made a difference - the open sound stage of 500 series sennheisers is amazing with it - in the end, the lack of applicable content (for me) made it not worth the $20 asking price.

That, and it's currently not readily available on macs - I imagine if I purchased the codec on my Windows machine, I'd eventually have to buy it again on mac, and the codec would only work on machine sI had logged into, since it's tied to the Windows store.

Unless there's some way to get the codec for free (or much cheaper), I can't recommend it. (It doesn't come free with atmos-enabled soundbars for example, so I don't think there's a way).

I’ve seen Sonarworks True-Fi advertised about the net.  Have you screwed around with that software filter?

I hadn't heard about it until now, since this is more of a "good experience" sort of thing for me, rather than a hobby or something I'm heavily invested in.

Although, the HD 595 (And the fundamentally identical 555) aren't listed on the support page for it, so I doubt it's going to be something I try.

I'm very happy with the performance I get out of traditional content with my setup, it's substantially better than any other devices I have available to me, and that's after almost 10 years of having this soundcard (purchased in August 2008) and more than 7 of owning these headphones (April 2011).
