Before I start this isn't an upgrade because I need to, I've got about £800 to spend and I was looking at what I could improve on my build before finances become tied up elsewhere so I can get the most life out of it as possible.

My current build:

  • Ryzen 7 1800X @ 3.8 (I've not been able to push it any further it just locks up no matter what I do)
  • Noctua NH-D15
  • Asus GTX 1070 Strix
  • Corsair  RM650X Modular
  • MSI X370 PRO Carbon
  • Fractal Design Meshify C
  • 32GB Corsair LPX 3200 DDR4
  • Samsung Evo 250GB x2
  • Corsair Force 3 240GB
  • Samsung 960 Pro 500GB M.2

The only things I don't want to avoid changing are; storage/case/cooler.

I primarily use it for gaming and VM's for testing.

To be honest, I'd do either

1) New monitor/mouse/desk/headphones/

2) Put the money on hold and keep it until you actually need new parts. Unless getting married is what'll tie up your finances. Then spend the money now. She (or he, or whatever) may not support that kind of spending at a later time.

Main rig: i7 8086K // EVGA Z370 Micro // 16GB Gskill TridentZ 3200Mhz CL14 // Sapphire Pulse RX 7800XT// a variety of noctua cooling // Corsair RM750x v2 //  Fractal Meshify C

Secondary rig: R5 3600 // MSI B450i Gaming Plus // 16GB Gskill FlareX 3200CL14 // MSI GTX 1080ti Gaming X // Cooler Master V650 // Fractal Meshify C

Audio setup: Audient iD4 // Adam A7X // Sennheiser HD 650 // Sennheiser HD 25-II // Audio Technica M50x // Sennheiser Momentum 4

That seems like a pretty solid and balanced build already. You could afford jumping over to threadripper, though that'll only help improve non-gaming scenarios and it's very likely a refresh is coming as soon as end of this year. For gaming improvement, the new ryzen stuff isn't really worth upgrading to from what you have imo (CPU only), and going with a 8700k and mobo would yield best gaming currently but you'd also give up 4 threads you MIGHT want to keep around for other things?

CPU: AMD Sempron 2400+ / MOBO: Abit NF7-S2G / GPU: WinFast A180BT 64MB / RAM: Mushkin DDR333 256MBx2 / HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 120GB

I'm guessing I would see similar performance changes if I jumped to X299 (7820X) as threadripper?

x299 and x399 give many of the same features over z270 and x370 but comparing the first two, for the price of a 7820x 8 core and mobo you can get a 1950x 16 core and mobo.
