Bad GPU?

As far as I can see on my PC the CPU sits at ~ 60-70% when in game with an opened browser and torrent. The thing is that your CPU shouldn't reach this percentage since it's an eight core CPU.

I bet that the GPU drivers are faulty since you are getting such framedrops. There should be no sign of bottleneck and also, relax, you CPU is not that old and doesn't need an upgrade soon.

So I've been having issues with my PC since this new GPU. Can't tell if it's a bad GPU or if it may be something else. First things first basic specs

  • i7 7820X 4.4 Ghz
  • EVGA 1080 Ti SC2 Hybrid (STOCK)
  • MSI 299X TOMAHAWK
  • 32 GB DDR4 HyperX 2400 Mhz (2x16)
  • Samsung NVME m.2
  • Corsair HX1000 PSU

Recently bought a 1080TI SC2 Hybrid Card and am not very happy with the results it brings me. When playing Far Cry 5 I noticed a low frame rate of around 60 - 70 in game with drops to 50 fps at times. This didn't seem right to me so I decided to look at some benchmarks on YouTube and around a couple forums. Seems people running hardware below my PC's performance are getting better frames with the same settings. (1080p ULTRA Everything)

Seen some PC's with i7 6700k with no OC running a 1080TI as well getting frames of around 110-130 FPS, with the lowest being 90 FPS. When I run the same benchmark and settings I am getting MAX 112 FPS with average of 70 'ish, low being 50s. This is not the only game this happens with! Warhammer: Vermintide 2 also runs lower then what I've seen online and with friends who have Identical computers. Also this is at 1080p as mentioned before. My friend who runs a I7 8700k  Asus 1080Ti Strix  gets no lower than 100 in game maxed out at 1440p.

Step's I have taken to try and fix this issue

  • Reinstall NVidia Drivers with clean install.
  • Removing GeForce Experience.
  • Make sure temperatures are all ideal.
  • CPU: Max 70 Degrees w/OC
  • GPU: Max 52 Degrees (Nothing else was I could see getting too hot)
  • Closing out of all programs open.
  • Removing all OC's.
  • Reinstalling Windows with all updates completed.
  • Adjusting NVidia setting to max performance
  • All motherboard drivers up to date.
  • BIOS also updated to latest.
  • Reinstalling Steam/Far Cry 5

Seems like this card is faulty or maybe I'm expecting too much. But after research I don't see why I'm getting low FPS.

Just to note this card cant even go 50+ MHz on core clock without being unstable.

So thinking this card is bad I contacted EVGA Support for some help. All I got out of them was that my CPU was the bottleneck?? I know maybe a 8700k would get better FPS, still doesn't explain my low FPS.

If you can't tell I'm a little sour! ANY help would be greatly appreciated! Sorry for the book just wanted to be clear.

I'll try a driver downgrade? I was one driver version behind when I first started playing, upgraded to latest thinking that must have been the problem.

You should try that! I've experienced the same issues with my 1050ti and with the overclock it had. Before upgrading to the latest driver everything was running very smooth. After the upgrade I was able only to place for let's say 5 to 10 minutes before a sudden black screen and crash occurred. Removing the overclock to the GPU did the trick in my situation but.. slowed the GPU down a little.

Well after going two versions down in drivers the FPS did go higher but within margin of error. Only 2 - 3 fps higher. Progress? :P
