Hello good folks!

So. I'm planning to put away some money to make a new build, and could really use some advice given I'm not the best at builds (presently, anyway. Always learning!).

With the exception of peripherals, cases/case fans and a PSU, this is an entirely new build. I'm warming to team red considering their prices are significantly lower than team blues so I will be looking for AMD options. I understand new Ryzen chips are releasing soon(TM) so is it worth waiting for one of those?

Budget & Location:

Roughly £1000-£1200, United Kingdom

Aim:

Gaming for the most part. Specifically MMO gaming. Is it true that MMO's are CPU-intensive? (Games like WoW, FF14, GuildWars 2, ect, ect). I'd also like to get Witcher 3 running at high/ultra without it wetting itself. I'd also like a motherboard with an M.2 port, I'm curious to see what the fuss is about.

Monitors:

Cheap, cheerful, runs at 1080p/i. Not looking for curved monitors, or ones with super-duper high refresh rates. Ideally 23.5-24".

Why am I upgrading:
I want to bring myself and my gear into the current generation. I feel I'm lagging very far behind with 4th generation processors and a GPU that's been ghetto-fied.

Ryzen 2 is literally coming out tomorrow so depends if you consider waiting 1 day is worth it :D

Yes MMOs tend to be really CPU intensive however they are not always optimised for multiple cores which might favour high IPC cpus, you should do some research on different MMOs (GW2 is well optimised even during massive sieges for example, but I've played one running  CryEngine 1 that never used more than 30% of my quad core)

Do you want a good quality panel with accurate colours like an IPS one or you don't mind going for cheaper TN ones? Do refresh rates beyond 60Hz matter to you?

4th gen Intels are still decent if you've got something like an i5 (still rocking one and runs everything I throw at it just fine). You might want to upgrade your GPU first though

Ah, I wasn't aware it was that soon! It's a build I'm saving for so I'd have to wait regardless.

Gotchya, I'll research the main ones I play and average out the requirements. I've noticed that WoW: Battle for Azeroth is getting a major update to its requirements and that's the main game I play.

I'm not really bothered about refresh rates beyond 60MHz. I'm using 2 monitors with that as the default currently and I've never ran into issues besides one of the monitors (Acer G24) being a bit bulky and generating a fair bit of heat.

A GPU upgrade is definitely something that'll come first. I'm considering a temporary 1050 just for sake of security from the "case-fan mummification" I've got on my 960. In the long-run, though, I'm looking for something beefier.

My i5-4430 is serving me well and meeting my requirements with perfection, though I kinda want to try my hand at overclocking in future and maybe some streaming once I get the stones for it.

Don't worry, the new generation isn't that far ahead and you've got a great deal by buying used anyway :D

I think your PC is more than adequate for at least the next couple of years (it is in fact very close to my current main rig in terms of performance with the main difference is that I have an unlocked i5) so I'd suggest you to save up so that you can get yourself a truly badass upgrade (which is what I am planning).

The 1050 is not really an upgrade to the 960 in fact it's a little bit slower with the only advantage of using less power (about 30W less) if you worry about the 960 dying I'd say depends on how it is being treated but I don't think it would die that soon because Maxwell isn't that old (I have a 8 years old HD5770 still running in my mom's office PC)

I just got my hands on a free i7 4770k cpu.

whats the best motherboard I can buy for this cpu ?

Can you not do this? Create a thread of your own and ask for advice there instead of piggy-backing off of mine.

I'll bare this in mind, then! Thankyou for the advice. The 960 isn't vigorously used, as in it's not used for high-end gaming or video editing, ect. It does the job well, I'm just a little wary about its, ahem, 'refurbishment' of having a casefan stuck to it instead of the stock fan. (The plastic became brittle and fell to pieces)

My long-term goal is to get a balls-to-the-walls badass rig with all the bells and whistles that go with it.

Two years worth of savings will get you there! And 2019 is probably going to be a hot year full of new hardware releases so the timing is perfect

The only worry I have there is the prices of GPU's remaining ludicrously high or worse, going even higher... As much as I do indeed want a ballin' rig, I don't fancy paying 2-3x the price of the valued RRP.

I would look at a Ryzen 8 core and X470 board. If you want to save a bit of cash then go with a 6 core instead and maybe wait for B450 chipset boards if you are not in a rush.

I may mock up a list of both chips/chipsets and see what gels the best with what I want to use it for, to find the right balance of productivity and price.
