I have a Windows 8.1 x64 laptop that I'm trying to upgrade to Windows 10. After the first restart, I get a MEMORY_MANAGEMENT blue screen with no additional info and then a full rollback.

After logging in a window shows up with the following text:

Quote

We couldn't install Windows 10
We've set your PC back to the way it was before you started installing Windows 10.

0xC19000101 - 0x30017
The installation failed in the FIRST_BOOT phase with an error during BOOT operation.

Things I've tried so far:
- Running memtest (no problems detected) and the BSOD never happens at other times.

- Running with one stick of RAM.

- Updating BIOS.

- Updating SSD firmware.

- Updating device drivers.

- Uninstalling AV.

- Making sure the installer downloads all the updates first before running.

- Googled these error codes and read just about everything.

But I'm still getting the BSOD every time and can't find any info on what's causing it.

Any ideas?

After a small bit of looking, it seems like this is a somewhat common issue. On another forum page someone had said they were able to get it to work by babysitting the install and doing a hard reset every time the BIOS screen popped up. This was the solution noted for a Dell Aurora R3.

Personally, I would make sure that you have all the latest windows updates, then download and run DiskMax. It's a free utility that basically cleans up all of the background garbage in Windows (unneeded temp files, old windows update installers, WinSxS Optimize...). Then I would try upgrading from there normally. If that didn't work then I might try the hard resets route.

Here is the link for the software  https://www.koshyjohn.com/software/diskmax/

The dev actually works for Microsoft and I've personally used this software since WinXP with nothing but good results.

If you're still having issues after trying this please be sure to note the exact model laptop that you're using to assist in finding a solution.

Thanks for the recommendation.
Using DiskMax didn't fix it. I also have all the 8.1 updates installed.
I'm using a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge 431.

I can't perform a hard reset at the bios screen as 1. it passes by in like half a second and 2. it's a laptop and doesn't have a reset button and holding the power button takes ~5 seconds to turn the device off, by which time the BSOD has already occurred.

My current working guess is that since I'm upgrading while keeping the apps and files, there's a driver carried over that isn't compatible with windows 10. Unfortunately, as the BSOD doesn't provide a dump file, there's no way to tell which one.
