Hi guys,

So I have been having random problems pop up on my MSI laptop and this was the second unit I have had since Christmas last year (First model had an issue but luckily I was able to get an replacement quickly). These problems do not occur within Windows itself and are instead, Isolated to Gaming workloads purely (that's where I experienced the crashing).

I would play a game for maybe half an hour to an hour lets say, and then the laptop would have a slight freeze lag {Game FPS drops to 0 for a second) then return to normal. However usually a minute later the whole game stops working completely, but whats also interesting is that the laptop itself doesn't appear to hard lock as when I try to Alt + Tab the menu within Windows does indeed pop up but when I try and select the desktop for example or another program open such as Chrome nothing happens and the screen doesn't want to leave the game. Also for most of the time that this crashing would occur the laptop would make 3 short beeping noises whenever and ONLY when I use the trackpad or the mouse which I thought was also interesting. I'm not sure what is causing this crash to happen and it is VERY hit and miss, one day it is completely fine and able to game for hours non stop without a hick up, but then the next day I can't go for more than an hour without it freezing 2-3 times. Every time the laptop does crash this way I am forced to hold down the power button until the thing turns off and only then does normal behavior return (after the thing restarts of course).

Currently my situation is that I have attempted a fresh start within Windows so that none of the MSI programs are on the laptop, I have also sent it into Scan which is the website where I purchased the laptop from and so far they said that they haven't been able to crash it (They have been running games at 4K as well as SuperPosition for hours on loop). Also before I made the fresh start to Windows I noticed within the maintenance log that there were a lot of random crashes logged, typically these were 'LiveKernelEvent 141', however the only time I noticed these on screen was when in game and the screen would flicker black for a fraction of a second and then return to normal. Sometimes I didn't even notice the thing do it before an event was logged down so i'm not sure what happened there. I can say however that since I made the fresh start to Windows, no logs of any sort have been noted so my guess is that problem was fixed?

Finally I wanted to put down my laptop specs if anyone needs it;

MSI GT62VR 7RE Dom Pro

i7-7700HQ

16GB RAM

GTX 1070 (Not Max-Q)

256GB SSD

1TB HDD

120Hz Screen w\ G-Sync

My apologies on such a long form but I'm really out of options for troubleshooting and I have never encountered any issues of such kind before :(

During gaming my system temps reached 90C on the CPU and 87C on the GPU, also thanks for replying so quickly!

Maybe your system is chocking on trying to throttle and it causes the GPU driver to crash. I'd start by using DDU to uninstall your GPU driver, then reinstall it fresh. Also, try running it on some kind of cooling element, it could even be like, a flipped over box fan, just to be sure that it's not an issue caused by heat. If while running cool you never see this issue, heat would be my first thought.

Desktop: i9 11900k, 32GB DDR4, 4060 Ti 8GB 🙂

Many thanks for your help! I'll definitely try it out once I can get the laptop returned to me from Scan. Also just a quick question, in terms of fan speed what programs would be ideal for manual fan controlling as I would like to have my fans run quicker (not 100%) when gaming just to aid in cooling as I cannot control the fans within the system BIOS unfortunately

You can try some programs like SpeedFan, but it's often the case with laptops that you can't manually control them. Although I think with MSI laptops they include a utility that also allows you to turbo the fan speed? See if you have any MSI control panels that let you mess with that.

Wow that abnormal for a MSI GT. Reseat the heatsink and do a repaste. Check fans are spinning or not. RMA it if can. Try reinstall Windows too, maybe some crap programs are eating CPU+GPU usage.
