Hello!

I have dived into the custom cabling world, and there have been both joys and pains from the experience...

I put forward the question to the group, and forgive me for my ignorance, but haven't been able to find the answer.

I have sorted out all the custom cabling for CPU and motherboard, but i'm currently stuck on the GPU

The GPU has 1 x 8 pin and the other is a 1 x 6 pin. I have completed the 8 pin, but i'm confused about how to connect the 6 pin

The reason for this is because the current PSU I have is Silverstone SX650-G. The cables that it came for the GPU is an 8 pin to 8 pin with the extension of the 6 pin attached.

Now is it possible to connect it via going straight 6 pin to 6 pin? or do I have to ensure that it goes from the 6 pin GPU to the 8 pin on the PSU like the cables that came in the box? So far, I haven't been able to track down a 6 pin to 6 pin, but have found 6 pin to 8 pin, which leads me to believe that even if it is a 6 pin on the GPU that it needs to be connected to the 8 pin rail?

Sorry if this is confusing, hopefully I get clarity with this !

I understand your confusion.

It is absolutely possible to make a 6pin to 6pin cable without any issue. As long as the individual wires are connected to the correct output of the PSU (+12V and GND) you are good to go!

Some people call me a magician..

But all I do is consult the mighty Google.

Hey thanks for answering this!

Following on from that, I've attached the pinout from the manual

The graphics card I have is Asus Geforce GTX 1080 ti 11gb Founders Edition

Now how will I know what needs to go where in terms of pinout? I generally referred to the original stock cables but obviously there isn't a 6 pin PCI-E cable.

Just want to make sure so I don't blow out my GPU xD

It's quite simple, really.

Take your regular 8pin -> remove the 2pin's on the right of the connector (when viewed from the front of the connector) -> é voila.

If I remember correctly, the 2pin's that have to go actually is a Y-split cable from the PSU.

Anyways, as long as the 6pin cable that you end up with has GND on top, and +12V on the bottom row you're good to go.

I hope this helps.

Layout is as how it should be if you look at the back side of the connector.

I took a few pics from an older cable I sleeved that was on my GPU side for example.

Spoiler

For the PSU side you should approach this the exact same way.

CPU: i7-12700KF Grill Plate Edition // MOBO: Asus Z690-PLUS WIFI D4 // RAM: 16GB G.Skill Trident Z 3200MHz CL14

GPU: MSI GTX 1080 FE // PSU: Corsair RM750i // CASE: Thermaltake Core X71 // BOOT: Samsung Evo 960 500GB

STORAGE: WD PC SN530 512GB + Samsung Evo 860 500GB // COOLING: Full custom loop // DISPLAY: LG 34UC89G-B

The PSU side will only accept 8 key connectors.

You do 8-pin to 6-pin (but leave two of the wires off). Slot 7 and 8 which will not be used(There both ground wires).

Current Build: Project Frost
Gaming Rig Build: Project Ice Dragon
