SO-DIMM vs DIMM

So in light of today's youtube video, I have a question. 

 

Why are there no desktop motherboards with SO-DIM slots? 

 

with motherboard layout space always something that gets fought over, why not use SO-DIMM slots to free up space?

There are a few boards that use it. I have an ITX board that does.

DIMM is cheaper to produce, you can have the same amount of memory with less dense modules.  That's at least my guess.

There are some that use SODIMM. Some server motherboards do as well. 

 

The reason it's not that common is because it really doesn't save that much space. It can make a system lower profile to fit in a thin case/housing, but most of the time, that's not an issue with desktop PCs.

there are, but larger modules are better because higher capacity and better cooling. RAM location doesn't conflict with other things on the board unless you go really really small boards so no reason to for most hardware.

SO-DIMMS exist for space limited scenarios like laptops or ITX boards.  The adapters to use them in desktops exist for diagnostic purposes or for those who want to re-use existing SO-DIMM inventory in desktops.
