So, as the title suggests I'm not the best at the computer building thing. I'm going to win an i7-8700K in an event and I have a couple of questions.

  • On the intel website I read that the CPU supports DDR4 RAM, does that mean I have to upgrade my DDR3 RAM? If so, what would be a motherboard with a good price/value combo (my current one doesn't support 1151 socket CPUs), and if not, same question but I would like to keep my DDR3 RAM.
  • I'm also looking to upgrade my power supply, preferably to 500/600 W. What would be better, and I also need a suggestion on which one I should buy.

Thanks in advance, sorry if I made any grammar mistakes or I'm missing anything that's obvious.

The 8700K requires a Z370 motherboard. As far as ram compatibility, the Z370 chipset does NOT support DDR3.

AMD Ryzen 3950x under a Noctua D15S, 32 Gb G Skill FlareX 3200 DDR4 running at 3200 CL14, Gigabyte Aorus Pro 570 Wifi, Gigabyte 2070 Super hooked to a Dell U2718Q 4k HDR monitor & an Acer 1440p 144hz IPS panel of some kind, an Inland 1 TB M.2 PCIE 4 main drive, a Samsung NVME M.2 250Gb, WD Blue 500Gb  and 1 TB SSDs, Corsair RMX750, Rainbows and butterflies...

If you're going to an 8700K, you'll need to get a Z370 chispet motherboard and you'll need to change to DDR4, there's no way to keep your DDR3 in the system with an 8700K. Something like the Asus Prime Z370-A is a good choice.

What's your budget for the PSU? If it's not much, then a Corsair CX550M would be a good, lower priced choice, but if you can spend a bit more, I'd advise going for something like an EVGA G3 or Corsair RMi/RMx

1. You have to upgrade to DDR4, with new mobo (Z370 chipset only, if you want to overclock). MSI's Z370-A Pro has good performance, though the BIOS might need some time to get used to.

2.

Units listed tier 3 or above are good choices. Others, not so much.

Regarding PSU, what kind of GPU would you like to run? 500-600 should be ok for most setups as long as you're not aiming for SLI/Crossfire. Furthermore, you need one to suit your needs and budget:

- Do you need a modular supply? semi-modular? or dont care as you'll shove the cables in the shroud?

- Do you care about fan noise? Reputable PSUs can spin up and down their fans as needed when under load. If you need a silent PC, you may need to go with a beefier PSU (750) to prevent the fans from ever coming on

Okay, thanks for the quick answers from everyone I'll consider the options :)

my suggestions are:

- Decide on a budget

- Use PC-part picker to check compatibility, and then post the set up here for further discussion with the group

- Do you really need an 8700k? I attached a barebones Ryzen build vs 8700k (yes I know the 8700k is a lot faster... but Price:Performance sucks)

- Are you planning to overclock the aforementioned 8700k?

- If you're not emotionally attached to an 8700k and can wait till april 19th, AMD is releasing the 2600 and 2600x 6-core Zen+ CPUs that are ~ 10% faster than their Zen counterparts

Whatever you do when it comes to the ram, do your best to ensure the ram that you do get is on the mobo's hardware QVL list.  Check the QVL BEFORE committing yourself to the ram.

Amen... although even if it's not on their QVL it may still work

I have saved up money as my budget and no I don't necessarily need an i7-8700K I just won it at an event so I thought I might as well use it, but I didn't know I would basically rebuild my PC. I think I will just stay with my current config, sell the i7 and buy some games. Thanks for the help anyway :)
